Netflix axes comedians' shows

Michelle Wolf and Joel McHale cancelled

Netflix has pulled the plug on two of its topical shows, The Break with Michelle Wolf, and The Joel McHale Show.

Wolf – who hit the headlines with her controversial routine at the White House Correspondents Dinner – had recorded 11 episodes of her show, and McHale 19 episodes of his.

The streaming service has struggled to with the sort of show that is such a staple of late-night network TV, having cancelled Chelsea Handler’s talk show after two seasons last year.

It is a crowded market. Hollywood website Deadline says there are  13 topical/talk shows on linear TV, including offerings from John Oliver and Jim Jefferies.

But other formats are in the works at Netflix, including The Fix with Jimmy Carr, Katherine Ryan and D.L. Hughley,  Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj and Norm Macdonald Has a Show.
