New sitcom for Greg Davies

Playing an overprotective father

Greg Davies is to play an overprotective father in a new BBC Three sitcom.

The stand-up and Inbetweeners star will face off against Californian actor Andy Samberg in the series, titled Cuckoo.

Samberg – a member of musically comedy group The Lonely Island and current cast member on Saturday Night Live – will play an idle hippie who Davies’s daughter impulsively marries on a gap year, then brings back home to Britain to meet the parents.

The commission was revealed in an interview with channel controller Zai Bennett in The Independent today, where he called it one of two programmes which exemplify ‘where I want BBC3 comedy to be’. The others is Bad Education, written by Jack Whitehall who also stars as an immature teacher.

‘I can't overstate the importance of comedy,’ Bennett said. ‘If you get comedy right it can define your channel.’
