Movie recut for R-rating

Sacha Baron Cohen’s film Bruno has avoided America’s NC-17 certificate, largely viewed as box office poison, after some of the more offensive scenes were re-edited.

After seeing an early cut of the movie last month, the Motion Picture Association of America reportedly wanted to give t the restrictive 18s-and-over rating usually associated with porn films.

But after producers resubmitted a new edit, the film has been given an R-rating, which means that anyone under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

According to trade paper Variety, the MPAA originally objected to several sexual scenes in the film – which may be made available on the DVD release.

In explaining the R-rating, the MPAA cited the movie's ‘pervasive strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity and language’.
