Russell Brand has been named one of the top ten comics to watch by Hollywood’s influential Variety magazine.

Brand is the only British star on the list, published to coincide with Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival.

The trade paper said: ‘Brand’s filter-free personality… has made him a coveted comedy commodity.’

The other names on the list are:

  • Brandon T Jackson: 19-year-old Detroit comic about to star alongside Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder.

  • Anthony Jeselnik: Stand-up with an arrogant persona, who wrote Sarah Silverman’s script for the Video Music Awards that upset Britney Spears.

  • Jon LaJoie: French-Canadian actor best known for his internet songs, such as Everyday Normal Guy

  • Ralphie May: 2003 Last Comic Standing finalist who has just recorded his third Comedy Central special.

  • TJ Miller: Alumnus of Chicago’s Second City comedy troupe, who recently appeared in the ABC sitcom Carpoolers.

  • John Mulaney: A stand-up being nurtured by Comedy Central, where he is currently writing alongside Demitri Martin.

  • Jay Phillips: Up-and-coming stand-up who got his break on Def Comedy Jam and recently appeared in the movie Baby Mama alongside Tina Fey.

  • Paul Rust: A ‘goofy’ comic who honed his skills at Los Angeles’s Upright Citizens Brigade theatre.

  • Casey Wilson: New Saturday Night cast member, and the only woman in the line-up. This sketch features both her and Rust:
