Richard Gadd's Baby Reindeer to become a Netflix series
Eight-episode show based on his experiences as a stalking victim
Netflix is to make an eight-part series based on Richard Gadd’s award-winning one-man show Baby Reindeer.
The show, about the comedian’s experiences of being the victim of stalking, is based on the monologue that debuted at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.
It then transferred to the Bush Theatre, London, where it won an Olivier Award for outstanding achievement at an affiliate theatre.
Burb from the streaming giant says: 'Baby Reindeer follows the writer and performer Richard Gadd's warped relationship with his female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deep, dark buried trauma.’
The show is one of seven announced by the platform after it set up a UK team to develop production here.
The slate also includes the Rowan Atkinson physical comedy series Man Vs Bee, horror story Cuckoo Song, teen witch show Half Bad, teen ghost-hunting stories Lockwood & Co and ‘mind-bending murder mystery’ The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle.
Netflix vice-president Anne Mensah said: ‘Setting up a team entirely based in the UK was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic programme makers we have here - to provide a space for writers, producers, directors and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale. UK-made stories really do speak to the world.’
Fife-born Gadd, 31, won the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2016 for his show Monkey See, Monkey Do, while acting credits include BBC Two’s Against The Law, BBC Three’s Clique and Sky Arts’ One Normal Night. He started his career as a finalist in the 2011 Chortle Student Comedy Award.
