Original Review:

Show Rating:Tripod rated 3/5

There’s not much to be said about this very enjoyable show. Tripod are an Australian musical comedy trio, and accurately named - take any one of them away and the show would collapse, they support and complement each other so well.

Their harmonies are great, they are more than competent musically and they look good together; geeky Scod, tall, pretty Gatesy and aesthetically challenged Yon, who probably has the best voice and a laudable less-is-more approach to comedy gurning.

Using a variety of musical styles, their songs cover yearning for the girl in the comic shop, getting the wrong film back, hippy environmentalists, a piece of clever dickery about prefixes, Japan and a homophobic (and very Aussie) Christmas tree, among other things. The comic ideas within the songs carry the humour, because lyrically there’s nothing particularly clever happening.

The on-stage banter is so smooth it feels slightly over-rehearsed, if I’m being picky. Slapping a short bald guy on his head has been around since silent movies were invented and before, inappropriate departure from script is standard these days, but this is joyful, crowd-pleasing stuff, good pop comedy.
