Miles Jupp: Everyday Rage And Dinner Party Chit-Chat

+
Description

Miles Jupp, the surprisingly angry but slightly reluctant comedian, returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his third full-length solo show.

This time though he will be shedding the tweed and some of his natural snobbery in order to examine why, despite his outward sweetness and serenity, he repeatedly falls victim to sudden flashes of appalling anger. There’ll be stories, convoluted explanations, misunderstood theories, half-remembered snatches of postprandial hilarity…

and a selection of cheese based puns.

I have seen Miles twice before in his persona of posh bloke talking down to plebs and always enjoyed. I assume he is trying to leave the persona behind as this was a much more personal show. The basic problem was most of the material apart from the laser quest stuff seemed to be written for his posh bloke character. Most of the jokes were funny but too long. In his character he can take his time , be a bit aloof and it still works. As a straight standup it is too long winded. Interestingly he really came alive doing his cheese based puns for the last 3 minutes showing his background of improv/sketches. I'd give it 2.5 (2 if there were no cheese based puns) He needs to either go back in character or heavily edit. Currently a work in progress one way or the other

I assumed from the title that this would be the same schtick as before. A lordly twat looking down on us all. The strange thing was it was written that way but it was Miles just doing stand up using his posh character voice. It didn't really work. There were a bunch of great lines but lots of wordy filling in between. If he is going to be a stand up he needs to lose loads of word He was funny but not as funny as landowner Miles. The night I saw him he wasn't that energised either until he did the cheese bit at the end where he came right out of his cheese closet and connected with everyone. 2 out of 5 for the first bit 5 out of 5 for the cheese-based puns
