Original Review:
This sassy Italian-Antipodean actress is as mad as hell and isn't going to take it any more. She's had enough of her Greek Yaya and Italian Nona (grandmothers to you or I) trying to marry her off, enough of her Catholic indoctrination and enough of her dreary dead-end job in the underwear section of a faceless department store. Thus she empowers herself, blossoming into a strong, independent woman and blah, blah, blah... all the usual clichés from the pages of Company magazine. Quite how donning the fetish get-up of fishnet tights and PVC hotpants smaller than Kylie's strikes a blow for feminism, I'm not sure. But there you go. Oh, and it's also a statement about not pandering to fashion and imposed images of beauty, apparently. It's all high camp, starting in a fantastic giant red stiletto shoe that doubled as a bed, ending with Catalano as a fully fledged dominatrix ordering a rather sheepish male member of the audience to his knees. This tosh is raised well above its expected level by Catalano's remarkable talents as a performer, not to mention her professional mentality that mean she gave her all, despite the small turnout. The show turned out a lot more enjoyable than expected, though I'm not convinced what strutting around in micro undercrackers added to womanhood, bitchiness...or indeed comedy. |
