New project to help North East comedy talent

Development scheme and a day of industry panels

Six comedy creators in the North East of England are to receive £1,000 to develop their ideas.

The NE Screen Comedy Hot House is part of the BBC’s City of Comedy initiative, which looks to develop talent in and around Newcastle.

Each chosen creator will also get development support and an introduction to production companies before pitching their ideas to BBC Comedy for feedback.

To encourage applicants, a day of free panels events is being staged at the Stand Comedy Club next Wednesday featuring producers and commissioners including Simon Mayhew-Archer (This Country), Rupert Majendie (Brian and Charles, Pls Like), Kirk Flash (This is Gay) and Julia McKenzie (BBC Studios Audio)

Lisa Laws, head of  talent and professional development at North East Screen said: ‘This is a first-of-its-kind opportunity for North East comedy creators ready to burst onto comedy platforms.’
