Joe Lycett and Mo Gilligan to receive National Comedy Awards

As best stand-up nominees also announced

Channel 4 comics Joe Lycett and Mo Gilligan are both to receive special accolades at the broadcaster’s National Comedy Awards tonight.

And the nominees for the best stand-up show have been revealed, which will be voted for during the broadcast.

Lycett will receive the ‘comedy game-changer award’ created by judges in recognition of his work to inspire social change through comedy, from  confronting Shell on greenwashing to challenging David Beckham to relinquish his role as an ambassador for FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

While Gilligan will get an ‘impact in comedy award in acknowledgement of his efforts to use his platform to shine a light on other black comics, including his Black British Takeover gigs at The O2.

Nominees for the best stand-up show  are:

  • Sam Campbell: Comedy Show
  • Tim Key: Mulberry
  • Amy Gledhill: The Girl Before The Girl You Marry
  • Joe Lycett: More, More, More! How Do You Joe Lycett? How Do You Joe Lycett?
  • Jordan Gray: Is It A Bird?

Even though only a fraction of the TV audience are likely to have seen the shows, this will be decided via a Twitter vote with the mechanism annoucned during the broadcast.

The National Comedy Awards for Stand Up To Cancer, hosted by Tom Allen, will be  broadcast live on Channel 4 at 9pm tonight.

The recipients of the comedy breakthrough star awards have previously been announced as Cheaters star Susan Wokoma, stand-up and singer Jordan Gray and Am I Being Unreasonable? scene-stealer Lenny Rush.
