Channel 4 backs Jimmy Carr

Second series of I Literally Just Told You ordered

Channel 4 has refused to bow to pressure to ‘cancel’ Jimmy Carr –and announced a second series of his game show I Literally Just Told You.

Announcing a new run of eight episodes, the broadcaster’s chief content officer Katz said Carr did a brilliant job as host – and defended the right of comedians to make offensive jokes.

‘If they can’t, then comedy is dead,’ he added.

Speaking to trade website Broadcast, Katz added: ‘Jimmy hasn’t espoused any views that are at odds with C4 values and just as we as a broadcaster exist to serve and represent a wide range of communities, we should always be home to the widest range of voices.’

However, he added that Channel 4 would not have aired the tasteless joke about the genocide of gypsies that featured in Carr’s Netflix special. His Dark Material, for fear of falling foul of the Ofcom broadcasting code.

The new run of I Literally Just Told You – created by Richard Bacon – will include two celebrity specials. The format sees contestants answering questions about what is going on during the filming, many of which are written on the spot.

Meanwhile, John Cleese is making a documentary for the broadcaster about the so-called ‘cancel culture’, as previously announced.
