Janey Godley diagnosed with ovarian cancer

'I've done nothing but cry and cry and cry'

Janey Godley has revealed she has ovarian cancer.

The 60-year-old comedian said she had ‘done nothing but cry and cry and cry’ since being diagnosed on Thursday.

She broke the news on social media, with a picture of herself in a hospital bed, as she explained why she had to cancel the last dates of her tour in Edinburgh and Musselburgh this weekend.

Godley learned the news at a Glasgow hospital, where she had arranged an appointment after feeling bloated

She said: ‘I want to thank everyone for their support and help.

‘On to the next step of my journey and what is that journey? I don't know if I'm going to be one of these people who battle bravely, who fight every step, I don't know.

‘That doesn't feel how I've been the last day, I've done nothing but cry and cry and cry but I'm going to use science, I'm going to use technology and I'm going to try and cope with this next step on the journey.’

And she urged other people with symptoms to get them looked at.

‘If you have any symptoms like I had, which was I felt as though I was full before I was eating a meal, I felt as though I had no real energy and there was a big bloatingness inside my stomach, I got it checked out and it's ovarian cancer.

‘So onwards and upwards, I want everybody to know that I really appreciate them for being behind me for so long and we will see what happens next.’

And she thanked the NHS for being ‘unbelievably brilliant’.

Her daughter, the comedian Ashley Storrie, said on Twitter: 'Devastation doesn't touch the edges of how I feel right now. Thank you to all the amazing NHS staff who've been looking after mum and helped her come to terms with this terrifying news.'

Godley found greater fame over lockdown with her parodies of Nicola Sturgeon's coronavirus briefings.

She featured in Scottish government coronavirus adverts but they were pulled after offensive tweets she had posted in the past were unearthed – and she  donated the £12,000 fee she was paid by the Scottish government to charity.
