Awards nod for Steve Coogan's Stan Laurel

...and for Maxine Peake as Funny Cow

Steve Coogan has been nominated for best actor at the British Independent Film Awards for his portrayal of Stan Laurel.

And Maxine Peake has been shortlisted for best actress for her leading role as a comedian on the Northern England working men’s club circuit in Funny Cow.

Stan & Ollie picked up six nominations in total, with Nina Arianda shortlisted for best supporting actress for playing Stan’s wife, Ida Kitaeva Laurel.

The film’s other nominations were for breakthrough producer, casting, costume and hair and make-up design. 

Coogan faces competition in his category from Joe Cole for A Prayer Before Dawn, Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince),  Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) and Joaquin Phoenix ( You Were Never Really Here)

While the other nominees for best actress are Gemma Arterton for The Escape, Jessie Buckley (Beast), Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and  Rachel Weisz (Disobedience)

The Favourite, a black comedy about the 18th Century court of Queen Anne, leads the list of nominations with 13 nods, followed by American Animals (11 nominations), and Beast (10 nominations).

Winners will be announced on December 2 in London.
