Reeves' new artwork goes on display

Matt Lucas, Jane Horrocks and Charlie Higson were among the stars at the launch of a new exhibition of artwork by Vic Reeves last night.

Wrestlers etc. is the comedian’s first London show for four years. It contains new paintings and drawings by the comedian under his real name of Jim Moir and will run at Grosvenor Gallery in St. James’s London until September 22.

Julia Somerville, his fellow contestant on Celebrity Masterchef was also at last night’s private viewing.

The gallery says: ‘Vic draws from a wide range of sources, to produce hugely characterful work that is at once surreal, amusing, bizarre and occasionally tinged with a sinister edge’.

And fellow artists Jake and Dinos Chapman describe Reeves’ art as being ‘able to command our laughter as a purgative, to encourage the viewer to leak at both ends’.

Reeves himself says of his art: ‘I think putting your imagination on canvas or a television screen is the same thing. If you’ve got an idea you have got to have an outlet for it. So if it’s painting, poetry, singing or acting it all comes out somewhere. ‘

The work is on sale, priced £470 to £12,000. There is a limited edition print available of the wrestlers image, which is £350.

Reeves has recently been seen in Manchester filming scenes for Coronation Street. He will play television presenter Colin who comes to Wetherfield to meet newlyweds Norris Cole and Mary Taylor after they are chosen to make an appearance on his show.
