Shelley star Hewel Bennett dies at 73

Actor Hywel Bennett, known for playing Shelley in the 1980s sitcom of the same name, has died aged 73, his agent has confirmed.

The Welsh actor also appeared in other TV shows such as Last of the Summer Wine, where he played Kevin; EastEnders, where he played a gangland boss; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as well as films including  The Family Way and The Virgin Solders.

But it was for playing Shelley, a smart but unemployed layabout living in a London bedsit, that he will be best known. The original series ran from 1979 to 1984 was followed by The Return of Shelley, which ran from 1988 to 1992.

At its peak, Shelley attracted more than 18 million viewers.

Bennett – who retired from acting due to ill health in 2007 – leaves one daughter, Emma, who he had with former wife Cathy McGowan.
