Trey Stone and Matt Parker hated the last series of South Park

...and here's why

Trey Parker has admitted he and his South Park creator Matt Stone hated the last season of the animated comedy.

He said they made a mistake in ridiculing the rise of Donald Trump, and will go back to childish high-jinks for the forthcoming 21st season.

In the last run, former teacher Mr Garrison successfully ran for President, with Caitlyn Jenner as his running mate, despite saying increasingly outlandish things in a bid to lose the race.

But now Parker has said that making topical jokes ‘has just gotten boring’ and wants to return to its roots.

‘We weren’t ever really that show,’ he told the LA Times.’We would do an entire season and there would be one moment that played off something that had just happened and people would go, "South Park is the show that does that." And that’s just not true. We’re not.

‘We did start to become that, though, especially the last season. We fell into the same trap that Saturday Night Live fell into… We’re becoming: "Tune in to see what we’re going to say about Trump." Matt and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow.’

‘We probably could put up billboards — "Look what we’re going to do to Trump next week!" — and get crazy ratings. But I just don’t care.

Parker also said that Trump had much in common with South Park.

‘The things that we do — being outrageous and taking things to the extreme to get a reaction out of people — he’s using those tools,’ he said.

‘At his rallies he gets people laughing and whooping. I don’t think he’s good at it. But it obviously sells — it made him president.’

Parker was speaking to promote his voiceover role in Despicable Me 3. Meanwhile the new series of South Park is expected on Comedy Central this summer.
