New podcast to parody other podcasts

David Reed launches Inside The Comedian

A new comedy podcast is set to spoof other comedy podcasts.

David Reed, best known for being one third of The Penny Dreadfuls, will parody the swathe of comics-talking-to-comics shows with Inside The Comedian.

He told Chortle: ‘I listen a lot to Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast and Comedian's Comedian, so started thinking about how many of these shows there now are.

‘As soon as something becomes mainstream it becomes ripe for parody and a comedian interviewing other comedians is about as mainstream as it gets these days in UK podcasting.

But he insisted: ’Inside The Comedian isn't a direct riff on those shows – as there's definitely an element of Inside the Actor's Studio in there. And Comedy Bang Bang who have done the fake interview so well.

‘Ultimately, I think there's room for one more of these show, but one where comedians don't get the option to take themselves seriously.’

He is recording the first episode next month with stand-ups Michael Legge and Tom Bell, who will improvise ridiculous answers to Reed’s questions, which then become true for the purposes of the podcast. Justin Edwards will be one of the guests in the second monthly episode.

The blurb for the recording gives a flavour of the tongue-in-cheek tone, stating: ‘Being a comedian is the hardest thing anyone can do. As such, those who achieve even a modicum of success in this selfless, humanitarian, dangerous career are rightly held up as the best of us. True heroes.’

Show One will be recorded at the Phoenix in Central London on March 15, in a double bill with Danielle Ward’s new podcast SpookyWookyCocktailHour – a sketch show described as ‘attempt to keep alive some of the weird/unsettling/frightening/inaccessible material she has written over the years’.

Reed and Ward already host a weekly film podcast together called Film Fandango for Absolute Radio.

Tickets to the taping are available here.
