Porridge's 'Grouty' dies at 93

Peter Vaughan was in Citizen Smith and Game Of Thrones

Peter Vaughan, who played Grouty in Porridge, has died at the age of 93.

He was more latterly known for playing Maester Aemon in HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones.

But before that he was probably most famous for Porridge. Despite appearing in only three episodes and the movie, the role, as the most feared lag in HMP Slade, was a memorable one.

He also played Charlie Johnson, the strict, straight-laced father of Wolfie in the first two series of Citizen Smith. Charlie disapproved of the self-appointed 'urban guerrilla' living under his roof, and would call him 'flaming yeti' or 'Chairman Mao'.

Vaughan's agent Sally Long-Innes said: 'Very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.'

Vaughan was married twice, first to fellow actor Billie Whitelaw, from 1952 to 1966, then to actress Lillias Walker, with whom he lived in West Sussex.
