US comic 'hooked on prescription drugs'

American comic John Pinette has reportedly checked into rehab after becoming addicted to prescription medication.

The comic, known for his endless supply of jokes about his own weight, cancelled his shows at the weekend and has cleared his diary into next month.

He tweeted: ‘Thanks to everyone for your concern and well wishes.. Want to apologize for having missed shows last weekend, but I hope you understand!’

Gossip website TMZ reported that the 49-year-old became hooked on drugs he was given after surgery earlier this year. It did not state where he is undergoing treatment or how long his treatment is expected to take.
