Award nod for Milton Jones's axed show
Sony recognition... and a P45
Milton Jones has been nominated for a Sony Radio award Ė just minutes after Chortle revealed that Radio 4 decided to axe the show.
It mirrors the coincidence that Another Case of Milton Jones was canned in the same week that Channel 4 had decided not to pick up his TV pilot, House Of Rooms for a full series.
We broke the news that the show had been axed after five series this morning, just as the Sony nominations were being announced.
Jonesís show is up for best comedy along with fellow Radio 4 shows: Down The Line, Mark Steelís In Town and The National Theatre of Brentís Iconic Icons Ė†plus 6 Musicís Adam and Joe.
Adam and Joe have also been shortlisted for best entertainment programme, against Frank Skinnerís Absolute Radio show. Also in that category are BBC Radio Humbersideís Beryl and Betty, Bauer Radio Scotlandís Boogie and Dingoís Big Saturday Show, and Dixie & Gayleís breakfast show on Real Radio Yorkshire
Do The Right Thing, a panel-show podcast hosted by Danielle Ward was nominated for best internet programme, alongside more serious offerings. The show was also nominated in the internet category of the Chortle Awards, which were presented earlier this month.
And stand-up-cum-BBC Radio Sheffield host Toby Foster is up for the speech radio personality of the year against Five Liveís Danny Baker and Richard Bacon, TalkSportís Alan Brazil and Metro Radioís Alan Robson.
Comic actress Katherine Jakeways is in line for best drama, for her Radio Four show North by Northamptonshire. Starring such comic luminaries as Mackenzie Crook, Kevin Eldon, Geoffrey Palmer, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Montagu and Sheila Hancock, it was based on an Edinburgh show.
Another Case Of Milton Jones has been running since 2005, but Jones has been on the Radio 4 with similar pun-based shows since1998.
