Bremner: Government is too bland to mock

Satirist says he's quitting C4 show

Rory Bremner says he wants to quitting satire because the new Government is too dull.

Although the coalition have sparked mass protests with the biggest spending cuts since the Second World War, Bremner says the Cabinet is so anonymous that he can’t mock them.

The 49-year-old claimed he would not be returning to Channel 4 because ‘there are simply no politicians in the new government that anybody recognises. That does make life a bit trickier for me.’

‘I don't think my life would be significantly poorer if I don't impersonate Nick Clegg’ he added. "’Life is short enough without sitting up night after night listening to tapes of him.’

Topical comedians often complain that new generations of politicians are too dull to mock – although that usually changes as the public get to know them better. Bremner made similar comments about Gordon Brown’s Cabinet two years ago.

And before the election, he said: ‘It's no wonder the Tory Party opposed identity cards, since so many of them struggle to find an identity at all.’

Despite Bremner’s comments in the Daily Telegraph, Channel 4 say they will approach him in the new year over possible new shows.
