ABC picks Thick

US network invests in political comedy

The BBC is to make a pilot episode of political comedy The Thick Of It for American network ABC.

Last month it was reported that Mitchell Hurwitz, creator of acclaimed but underperforming sitcom Arrested Development, was adapting the show for the US market and touting it around the networks.

Now BBC Worldwide and Sony have landed a deal with ABC to make it into a pilot, with The Thick Of It’s creator Armando Iannucci as one of the executive producers.

Iannucci told MediaGuardian: ‘Since I was a boy I've had a freakish obsession with American politics. Every two years I'd spend a sleepless night watching coverage of congressional and presidential elections.’

The US version will follow the trials and tribulations of a Congressman on Capitol Hill.

Arrested Development writer Richard Day will work on the ABC pilot.
