Phoenix rises fast

Kay's sitcom breaks DVD records

The second series of Phoenix Nights has become the fastest selling TV DVD of all time.

Peter Kay's comedy has shifted 160,000 copies in its first week, shattering the previous record held by The Office, which sold 80,000 during its first week on sale a year ago.

However, its record could be short-lived - as the second series of Ricky Gervais's sitcom released on DVD on Monday.

The two comedies will also compete to be the best-selling TV series on DVD ever - a record currently held by The Office, which sold more than a million copies in the run-up to Christmas last year.

Kay is currently working on a Phoenix Nights follow-up, with doormen Max and Paddy touring the country in a camper van.
