Wil Hodgson: Punkanory

Performing his seventh consecutive solo show at the Fringe this year – the first won him the Perrier newcomer award in 2004 - Hodgson has become something of an institution.
It’s reassuring that amid the Fringe craziness that there’s a room somewhere in town where you can go and listen to the world according to the idiosyncratic Hodgson. And a beguiling world it is.
For those not in the know (where have you been?) he’s a comic with leftie sensibilities: a feminist who celebrates the female form in all its wonderful variations in size or age, he’s a skinhead but what hair he does sport is pink, he has armfuls of Care Bear tattoos and is a resident of Chippenham, Wiltshire, who despises a small-town frame of mind.

Today there are further tales of the above but in particular the show focuses on his collections; he has Care Bears, My Little Ponies, Spice Girls memorabilia, oh and a cat to perturb any nosy people who go poking about the sofa where his Care Bears live. To one side of the stage he has a soapbox on which to physically stand when he feels the metaphorical need to mount it.
As well celebrating his own memorabilia, Hodgson poignantly recalls the meticulously and lovingly assembled collection of an another local character who died, leaving his precious items of fandom and pretty much nothing else. He also divulges the whereabouts of a spectacular car boot sale in Edinburgh where he almost, but not quite, bought a flintlock pistol.
As ever, his ideas are inventive and invested with a beautiful turn of phrase, where else would you hear parallels drawn between Care Bear land Care-a-Lot and Stalin’s regime?
It has to be said that there’s something of the religious service about the small, quiet crowd sat beneath the stone arches of the Caves on a weekday afternoon listening to Hodgson’s sermon; a passionate diatribe by a man genuinely enthusiastic about his subjects. Amen to that.

Seen Will at Bar Blue Comedy on the Albert Dock Liverpool. I though he was going to be funny but he had a nightmare and if it hadn't been for the compare Chris Cairns I'd have asked for a refund. He finished his set early and although i felt sorry for him i was glad he did. He never once 'came up for air' and didn't give anyone a chance to get his jokes. If i saw him on the list again, i'd give him another go but wouldn't be optimistic.
Nik Hill - 17/09/2009
Gigged with Will last night on home turf in Chippenham, relaxed and engaging, as good as ever.
Alex Maple - 29/07/2009
Great performer with some great material. He subverts social concepts effectively and efficiently in his club sets, but still has a gag-gag-gag approach within the stories he narrates. I like this guy a lot.
Jenny Logan - 03/06/2009
Saw him when he supported Mark Thomas will try to catch his show up in Edinburgh as he is really a funny guy. I loved him!
Nik Hill - 25/02/2009
I saw Will a few months ago at a theatre type gig in Evesham; i knew what to expect, the majority of the audience didn't and, for a few people, it showed. He has an agenda, he is a performer and has points to get across, some that are funny, some that are thought provoking, and some that aren't; he doesn't really banter with an audience and his style could easily be interpreted as "reading" from a script; visually he can shock and i think people are genuinely uncomfortable at times with this and their minds are not always therfore in tune with what he's about. I'd love to see him relax a bit more and engage with the audience as i think this would show a different side and get more people going with him on his magical journeys! He's a talented, down to earth bloke with good values, don't think we've seen the best of him yet.

Seen Wil on January 27th at the Empire comedy club in Belfast. I hate to put comedians down but it felt like he was constantly reading from a script, and a bad one at that. The comedy was completely irrelevant to the people there that night. He did not deserve the treatment he received from a few members of the audience but the performance was bleak as he lost the confidence of the crowd within minutes.
Nik Hill - 28/11/2006
I think Wil's one of those who you either get or you don't, there is no middle ground; haven't seen him for about six months now so hard to comment on recent performances, he'll never be a tv favourite as that's not what he's about, but if you want to hear it from the heart then Wil's your man. Clever, articulate and funny.
CHH - 11/10/2006
Tonight, at Clifton Hill House in Bristol Will Hodgson was hilarious and engaging. Unfortunately he seemed to leave in a huff (apparently because he thought he'd offended someone with a joke). However he made the night and everybody bloomin loved him.
Susie B - 18/07/2006
I love him, and find him very funny. Probably not everyone's cup of tea , but I find him refreshing in a sea of same old, same old comedians. Looking forward to his Ed show - haven't been disapointed so far by any of the shows I've seen.
Adelina - 13/07/2006
It was excruciating - like watching someone who is losing the plot on stage, on the edge of a nervous breakdown. The laughs got thinner and thinner on the ground as the comedy departed and heartbreaking tragic memories set in.
Matthew Sheppard - 12/05/2006
I'm fortunate enough to have seen Wil perform many times over the years both as a compere and an act. He has always delivered a first class show leaving an audience often crying with laughter. A true talent who rightly deserves to go far.
Bruce Banks - 12/05/2006
Wil Hodgson has become a real treat to watch. He never fails to impress me with his routine. I have seen him twice in the last month and the new material that he was trying out for his new Edinburgh show was superb, not a knob joke in sight! this guy never compromises for one moment, his routine is fresh funny and thought provoking, just utterly brilliant
Big Guns Jocelyn - 11/04/2006
Just very, very good
Iain, Ealing - 02/04/2006
Saw Will at Red Rose on April. 1 I felt I was the fool for buying the ticket as his set didn't involve much in the way of comedy - just a monologue/diatribe style of story telling. Should look at Simon Bligh to see how a personal story can be turned into a 45 minute comedy masterpiece. Like the 'challenging' nature of his act, and his persona - it just lacked laughs. Sorry
Big Rch - 30/01/2006
Wil Hodgson is the most important comic around at the moment. His material and set transcends 'stand up' in the traditional sense and it is a pleasure to witness. Do yourself a favour, go and see the amazing Hodgson
Natilly - 09/11/2005
Wil is a comic genius. Different from mundane ordinary comics, a pleasure to see.
Alex - 06/11/2005
Some funny bits but generally just being angry at intolerant people and getting cheap laughs at collecting Care Bears.
Delboy - 01/11/2005
He's strange and unique. His laughs come from extremely original material. Very funny.
Hannah Laker - 19/10/2005
Not my cup of tea to be honest. didnt stop talking. No pauses.
Brian Gorman - 02/10/2005
Loved it. Sheer, uncompromising intelligence. Pity the audience were mainly silent and uncomprehending! Great atmosphere though!! In the presence of someone not afraid to tell the raw truth. Made me look at Peter Kay in a whole new light. Forget the absence of 'belly laughs' - this is the real deal
Ben - 16/09/2005
He's a storytelling genius. Has more in common with the oral tradition than the stand up comics. He dares you to follow his stories that don't really seem to have a punch line but always have a point. His is the work of a bizzarre imagination. Weirdly mesmerising.
Barnaby - 22/08/2005
Maybe not always belly-laugh territory, but original and never boring. Often very funny in his Edinburgh act this year. Good luck to Wil.
Critic - 21/05/2005
Apart from using himself as a visual joke through his stage appearance -a low form of wit anyway - he had little else
Rhys Watkins - 14/05/2005
Seen him twice in two months and both times different material -fantastic comedian with a great future.
Jane - 25/04/2005
Consistently makes me cheerlead from my seat. Original, funny, and mesmerising, as well as being one of the most engaging and entertaining feminists in the country. A great storyteller and a great stand-up.
JD - 16/03/2005
I was expecting the worst based on his appearance. Needn't have worried. The man is a genius. Go and see him
Dave - 11/03/2005
Very refreshing and enjoyable slant on life, the universe and Mt Little Ponies
Colonel - 05/03/2005
You know that laughter where no sound comes out and you look like you're struggling to pass water? That's what he does to you.
Ben - 11/02/2005
Hilarious and endearing. A bit wasted on the audience of near silent freshers and I'd agree that there were no big killer laughs, just non stop brilliance from beginning to end. Go see him.
Sam Hancock - 25/01/2005
Total genius
Alan Donald - 02/01/2005
In short, a genius.
Marie Sampson - 22/10/2004
Saw him last night at the Dome in Brighton. Near total silence for his entire act. Sorry, but despite his worthy views, I can't see why he won the Perrier newcomer award. His act is original and yet dull at the same time. Nobody laughed.
Joan Culloty - 11/08/2004
A one-man new wave of comedy. One of the pearliest pearls on the circuit.
V J Collett - 26/07/2004
Funny fast and thought provoking. A thoroughly entertaining entertainer. But I will never look at a care-bear quite the same again. He has never failed to deliver every time I have seen him.
Matt Drayton - 07/06/2004
I have just witnessed a shocking pink whirlwind of comedy genius. Superlatives can not express how good Wil was tonight. He held an audience mesmerised on an otherwise difficult night. Wil at his best is truly a sight not to be missed. If he continues on this form a Perrier awaits.
Tina - 12/05/2004
I found him very funny, and love his attitude.
Nik Hill - 14/04/2004
Class.
Steve Hall - 26/03/2004
Wonderful
Adam Franklin - 19/03/2004
Superb, A breath of fresh air against bills of comedy dominated by white, young, wanking, mysoginist men, Will has the potential to go as far as he wants, my view is he will shun the road of commerciality as has Kitson and concentrate on his comedy which is cathartic, thought-provoking, and very dark.
