Sarah Millican: Thoroughly Modern Millican

The theme for Sarah Millican’s latest show is a gift for critics – it’s all about how she’s risk-averse.
Because her comedy is rarely, if ever, going to take a chance, being based so firmly in homely, comfortable domesticity. Equally, there’s no gamble in buying a ticket; you can be guaranteed a solid hour of charming anecdotes, easily identifiable situations, and the odd pun, all accompanied with a saucy self-deprecation. It’s that certainty that means in just four short years she’s become one of the biggest acts on the Fringe.
She splits the world into cautious dodgems and reckless bumper cars: ‘Live life to the full, that’s what it’s all about!’ she rallies, then undercuts with perfect timing. ‘No, it isn’t.’ She’s obviously a dodgem; she’s never taken drugs, preferring a Twix or a carvery, to Es and wizz, and a thrill for her is starting a new tea towel, not bungee jumping. ‘I had an apple the other day,’ she says with an air of adventure that reinforces the message – as well as her well-cultivated image as an exercise-shy cake-lover.

Such modest outlook is a snug fit for her warm Geordie tones, approachable manner and easy rapport with the audience. Maybe she reminds people of their Mam, but punters instantly find themselves comfortable in her confidence. When she asks for signs of falling in love, she gets such a delightfully romantic answer, ‘uncontrollable smiling’, it takes all her focus not to go off on a full-on conversation, ignoring the rest of the 750 people in the room.
That relaxed relationship between comic and performer is a two-way street, too. She feels completely at home sharing details of her life, from tender jokes with her boyfriend to … well, sexy times with her boyfriend that they can’t quite pull off, in that charmingly inept British way. That open honesty also extends to her love of sprouts: ‘I don’t mind telling you, I’m absolutely toxic,’ she says of her Christmas night flatulence. Thanks for sharing.
Her settled relationship with an obvious kindred spirit might make her more settled and cosy, although she does say that at the age of 36, she’s finally getting more confident, and feeling more womanly. Whether that will make her comedy more or less adventurous remains to be seen.
But this adept offering is perfect for the dodgems; a trusted and proven hour sure to generate if not ‘uncontrollable’ smiles, but plenty of grins and the odd hearty chuckle. Leave the bumper cars to fling themselves to the more obscure corners of the Fringe, and the very real possibility of disappointment you will never get with Millican.

Saw her for the 2nd time tonight at Blackpool, definately the best female comedian in the uk at the moment by a mile. And better than most of the blokes I have seen in the last couple of years
Lib Gardener - 25/10/2011
I love Sarah. She is the funniest woman in comedy, making it look so effortless. Keep making me laugh darling
Dan, London - 11/10/2011
Fantastically unfunny and comes across as really quite objectionable (horribly passive aggressive at times). Ubiquity is not a guarantee of talent.
Steve Flashman - 15/10/2010
This woman has a serious talent.... Funny, quirky. edgy, soulful, dirty, evocative, thoughtful, thoughtful. A thinking person's comedian.
EB - 09/07/2010
This girl is fantastic a breath of fresh air to us ladies! Men who don't like her are probably at the end of her jokes!
ns - 07/06/2010
Not funny at all - she actually annoys me. She's on the TV all the time and is ALWAYS the weakest link in a group comedy format. Just being game and brave enough to get up onstage isn't really enough. You need decent material.
Jeff - 01/03/2010
Horses for courses perhaps as we saw Sarah this weekend as part of a triple bill and she held her own among some well established acts and then some!Despite a wee bit of nerves at the start she soon settled down and gave us some of the biggest and best belly laughs of the entire evening. Occasionally seriously filthy, albeit in a good way just like a raucous night with your mates after a few drinks, after 5mins Sarah managed to draw us all in to her chatter and most of the room was rapt. Sure, some of the material is her take of hack subjects like feeling a bit plumper than you would like compared to media images of women or the subtle differences between your boyfriend when you are dating and his behaviour once you settle into a relationship et al. However I have to say we found that her considerable charm and the warmth and honesty of her friendly delivery triumphed over some of the weaker material.rnTwo of our gang had only discovered Sarah recently from her Radio 4 show and were not expecting such a professionally accomplished performance. In particular we all found her banter with the audience exemplary, some gentle probing unearthed an couple of real gems and she respectfully backed off a couple who were clearly not interested in joining in despite sitting bang front row centre wearing hats. So from us four, Sarah is a hearty well recommended! Esp. if you like what you may have seen of her on TV or heard on R4. You may well find yourself pleasantly surprised by her live set, as we were.

Simply not funny. always Talking about her "downstairs" as she puts it, trying to be rude as Jo Brand but nowhere near as funny.
JSE - 12/12/2009
I've seen Sarah a few times on TV now, & she's never failed to be anything less than entertaining. Even had me chocking on my coffee with a one-liner on the Apollo last night! ;-) Hopefully I'll have a job again soon, & therefore the money to pay to see a full live show.
Sam from Wrexham - 03/12/2009
Saw her at Llangollen, at the Kill For a Seat club. I wasn't sure that she was going to be very good - TV doesn't show her off. She was brilliant, one of the best comedians I have seen. So good she was called back for an encore. I'd see her again in a heartbeat a very funny, very dirty young woman. Excellent!
santos - 26/11/2009
Just don't see what makes her funny, honestly did not laugh once watching her at the Apollo. She's boring
Lee Grant - 15/11/2009
I saw Sarah in Birmingham last Thursday and she was fantastic. Was on stage for over an hour and had the audience hanging on her every word all the way through, even tried out some new stuff which was really good. Also had some nice put downs for one chap who became a little excited.
FH - 14/08/2009
I saw Sarah doing the Manchester Michael MacIntyre thing, and I thought she was very, very good. Sweet and dark, she did brilliantly and myself and my partner enjoyed her work!
J. Strang - 26/07/2009
Not very good. Not funny. In fact dreary. When are women comedians going to shut up about boyfriend/ex husbands, cake and getting fat? BORING
Craig Ratcliffe - 09/06/2009
Just saw Sarah's Edinburgh preview and after reading brilliant reviews of her previous Edinburgh Show, I had high hopes of a good night. However, the show felt unstructured and the material was far from cutting edge with rather stereotypical punchlines i.e. All truck drivers are prostitute murderers. I understand fully that this show was a preview but still feel that Sarah is going to have to put alot more work into the show if it its to gain as much success as last years.
Paddy Rogers - 24/02/2009
Saw Sarah a couple of years ago in Sheffield, only decided to write a comment now to encourage people to go see her. She was the least experienced and funniest comic of the night. Changed my idiot opinion that women comedians are rubbish.
Alastair - 01/12/2008
Very funny woman, great delivery and stagecraft. I think i'm in love !
John F Keane - 04/08/2008
She is a female comic who is genuinely funny (unlike, say, Dawn French). Her material is a more personal than cutting edge, but she is very good at what she does. A solid performer and confident with the audience.
Merrion Pillary - 21/06/2008
I saw Sarah at Hoot Comedy Club at trinity Arts centre, Gainsborough a few days ago and she was so funny. I was in tears and she made the snuff fly out my nose. A massive future lies ahead for her, methinks.
Michael Monkhouse - 16/03/2008
Some wildly varied reviews here and I gotta say I'm with the enthusiasts. I've seen her three times and always find her stuff sharp, witty, funny and above all fun.
Andy Munro - 01/09/2007
My girlfriend & I saw Sarah at Headliners last night and were utterly floored by this sharp display of dark humour. Amid the poignant tales of domestic dysfunction are wonderfully barbed observations of sexual deviance and violence all delivered in a soft Tyneside lilt. Homely and down at heel yet dripping with menace. Oh, and dead fuckin' funny!
julian - 15/08/2007
She's still squeezing material out of her divorce from four years ago? Cutting edge.
John Telford - 07/06/2007
I love standup and Sarah is one of the best, male or female. Taking a nasty divorce and making people laugh at it will help a lot of people realise it's not the end of the world. Excellent work Sarah.
Julian H. - 11/02/2007
Saw Sarah at Bracknell's Comedy Cellar last Friday. Fabulous! The highlight of the evening.
Benita - 04/12/2006
Saw her a few weeks back and had a few giggles, but I can't say she brought the house down. She didn't exactly die, but not far short.
Jonathan Porter - 21/08/2006
Saw once a few months back in Perth absolutely brilliant, she has amazing potential and am excited that she is a writer as well, which means she should have a bright future.
Audley Carder-Gray - 08/07/2006
In this day and age everyone is obsessed with recycling. And thats what Millican does best. Recycle redundant and hackneyed second rate gags and turns them into deluxe trash. This is throw-away non-humour of the worst kind
Michael Crane - 09/06/2006
I saw Sarah just over a week ago in Lincoln at the Drill Hall and I am still laughing! I expect to be laughing for some time to come. She was fantastic. Her surname might be just one letter different from being a comic genius - but she's almost there
Billy - 08/02/2006
Extremly funny.
Victoria Cook - 06/02/2006
I've seen Sarah several times now and she never fails to make me howl with laughter. A fantasic comic - I reckon we're going to see alot more of Ms.Millican in 2006
Harvey M - 25/07/2005
Didn't Bridget Jones do the whole knicker routine a while back? Lovely Geordie voice, but needs to work a lot harder if she's to impress. Dull dull dull.
