Sarah Keyworth wins Melbourne's top comedy prize
Sarah Keyworth has won the award for the most outstanding show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
The British comic took the top award in Australian comedy for their show My Eyes Are Up Here, in which they talk about their family’s acceptance of their non-binary identity, and undergoing top surgery.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Keyworth thanked the show's director, Jet Vevers, as well as the directors of their previous shows – Paul Byrne and Adam Brace, both of whom died early. ‘Everything I do has their mark on it,’ they said.
The comic added: ‘The other shows that were nominated were as absolutely incredible, and comedy heroes of mine, absolutely amazing. So this has been a very special experience.
‘I've been to Edinburgh multiple times and the standout thing about this festival is how nice you all are across the board. Everybody: venue staff, tech staff, absolutely incredible. It's just been such a lovely experience. So thank you so much.’
Here is their acceptance speech:
Also nominated were John Kearns, Rose Matafeo, Julia Masli, Celia Pacquola, Kanan Gill, Takashi Wakasugi, Lou Wall, Oliver Coleman and Ray O’Leary.
Best newcomer went to Noah Szto; the Pinder Prize – which helps an Australian act go to Edinburgh – went to Bronwyn Kuss – and the Festival Directors Award went to Ben Russell.
The Piece Of Wood Award for comedians’ comedian – an actual piece of wood - went to Claire Hooper after a vote of all previous winners.
Dougie Baldwin takes home the Golden Gibbo. In honour of the late, Lynda Gibson, the award aims to highlight a local, independent act that is pursuing their idea more than commercial gain.
Aaron Chen won the People’s Choice Award for selling the most tickets.
