Peacock & Gamble: Fringe 2012

It’s a good job Ray Peacock and Ed Gamble don’t want to be on telly anyway – and it is entirely their choice, of course – since TV does not have a great record of transferring big, dumb but hilarious comedians to the small screen. Three words: We. Are. Klang.
Indeed, live is the only way to properly experience this madness, and preferably alongside as many people prepared to throw themselves into the anarchic spirit as possible. It’s a good crowd tonight, for sure, even catching our ebullient hosts out by participating more than they are used to.
But they are such infectious fools, so it’s not such a great surprise. They hark back to old-school double acts where the stupid leads the stupider into bold, overplayed sketches.
read more of this review …
There’s a real lack of cynicism in the way they throw themselves into the action. And what action there is, as they’ve chucked all manner of sketch ideas at the wall. It ramps up the frenetic pace, meaning no joke outstays its welcome (though crap ventriloquist’s puppet Naughty Keith comes close) and they’ve always get a get-out for any situation, by just returning to one of several other running gags.
For some reason, allegedly unknown even to them, P&G have decided to set their show in a lighthouse. Truth is they are more canny than that, and it helps evoke the spirit of children’s shows such as Emu and his Pink Windmill, regressing their audience to youthful high spirits.
Silly, enthusiastic and not the brightest bulb in the lighthouse, Ray Peacock is a human Elmo, such is his innate likeability. Or, rather, an Elmo doll that now says rude things because of a mix-up at the factory. Whatever; you warm to his naivety, even when he’s misbehaving or showing off.
A newly slimline Ed Gamble, though younger, is like the older brother in the dynamic: joining in with Peacock’s high jinks, though aware that now and again they’re getting out of hand, and someone has to act all responsible and put a stop to things.
Their knockabout playfulness seems so casual, almost spontaneous, but clearly quite a lot of work has gone into this; the action is so fast that it packs in the ideas, and proper jokes and well-practised physical business, are slipped in under the bluster. Though when Ray tries to actually tell a joke, of course he screws it up.
There’s also something for the ladies for their very tongue-in-cheek Humour For Women section, since females need their own special-ability comedy.
To properly appreciate this full-on daft hour, always make sure you take someone special with you: your inner child.

I recently saw him at the Leicester Comedy Festival and thought he completely smashed it. I've seen him before, doing a wicked show at LCF 2010 with Ed Gamble & a short set at Summer Sundae, the former had pretty much every member of the audience involved (My girlfriend was asked to distribute cookies to the crowd and my brother-in-law was fed a Ginsters by 'Santa Claus'). However, this was the first time I've seen a his full, 90 minute solo show. Ray commanded the room, giving off a friendly, but firm attitude. he dealt with some annoying middleaged bloke very well, managing to get new, funny material from a potentially bothersome situation. Ray has an interesting, intriguing life and he's one of the few comedians who I actually want to hear more 'real life' material from. He's well worth seeing basically.
Jon Perry - 09/11/2011
Saw Ray Peacock recently, not funny, unless you find audience intimidation amusing, I don't. Also professional Yorkshires are dull
Milo - 20/03/2011
His podcasts are such a big influence on my life... which is probably a bad thing. Love him. Very funny.
Ni Tle - 31/01/2011
He's a very funny man, very very funny .... a line up with him on it can't go far wrong.
William Bates - 24/01/2011
Saw Ray lastnight at Shrewsbury. He is very very funny especial when telling of his practical jokes with his partner in crime Ed Gamble. Definitely worth a look.
Sweetcorn Jerry - 19/11/2010
I saw Ray headlining at the Frog and Fiddle yesterday evening. The evening was spoiled a bit by a little group of drunken-heckly types. These guys were quite intimidating in terms of their size and general demeanour and well out of place among the crowd. The other comics tried to deal with them with varying degrees of success. What was truly marvellous was that, bar one, they all bottled it when Ray came on! Ha! Ran away to the bar and did not return. The one who stayed, attempted one brief heckle...good luck.."no,no" Ray silenced him with a tiny finger wag: job done! That's class. Ray Peacock made the night work: a fine performer indeed.
Ni Tle - 09/10/2010
Saw him t'other evening, despite having very different opinions on some things, I thought he was a competent and entertaining compere...
Bob - 24/08/2010
I saw him in Luton. There was a confrontational and crass compere who picked on members of the audience. I then saw Ray Peacock in complete contrast. He read the room so well. Put the audience at ease and gave an inspiring performance. Thought he was a lot like Daniel Kitson.
Tom Everitt - 26/05/2010
I saw Ray at a charity comedy night in High Wycombe recently and thought he was very funny especially when attempting to kick bottles of water into the audience. Ray is yet another stand up to add to my list of comedians I have seen who have inspired me to give stand up a go.
C Shaw - 10/04/2010
One of the best headliners and MC's on the circuit. I've never seen him blame an audience for not laughing, probably because in the dozens and dozens of times that I've watched him I've never seen him fail to leave an audience in stitches. Brilliant.
Jon - 03/04/2010
Ray Peacock has a habit of blaming the audience when he's not funny and they don't laugh, that means that he blames the audience every time he's on stage. He is the worst stand up I have ever seen. Take my advice give him a miss
Haulwen Pughe - 14/11/2009
Easily one of the finest comiedians on the circuit. Saw him at Porthcawl last night and he was very quick and sharp.

I am a person who strongly believes in people’s right to freedom of speech; however it is incredibly offensive to see it being miss-used. I’m a believer in “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all”. If you want to criticise something at least be constructive. So instead of calling people who have left rude comments “stupid sad c*n*s” I compel you educate yourselves, grow up and consider other people rather than yourself. Ray Peacock has not once failed to make me laugh and is one of the most genuine and kind hearted people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He takes the time to talk to people after gigs and always has time for a fan either in person or online. Finally fans of Ray are a loyal bunch and there are a lot of us, so watch out!
Sam Metcalf - 11/11/2009
I'm in total disagreement with G.J. I go to Bracknell comedy cellar whenever I can and Ray is one thing that draws me to go back. I will go and sit through three acts just to see him MC-ing! And he is most certainly not a moron as his routines are always different, unlike many comedians who stick with a set routine all the time. He is an incredibly intelligent performer who works off the audience with super-human speed. His podcast also displays his great imagination and versatility. As for the "it's not our fault we aren't laughing" comment, I can honestly say I have never seen him not make an audience laugh. I will continue to be a dedicated fan for years to come!
Beth - 11/11/2009
I go to Bracknell Comedy all the time, and I can honestly say that I'm so glad comedians of Ray's calibre still bother to do the local gigs, because he is such a brilliantly funny compere. His improvisation never falters and ever with the most dull of front-rowers he can make us laugh until we cry. Always hilarious, always current and definitely the best comedian we're lucky enough to have on our circuit... FACT.
G.J. - 27/10/2009
Ray Peacock is a regular at our local Bracknell Comedy Club and I'm definitely not a fan. I don't go now if he is on -that's how bad its got. It's not our fault if we're not laughing, you moron!
A huge fan of Ray peacock - 16/07/2008
As someone who's lived in South Wales all his life, I'd like to distance myself and many of my fellow countrymen from the views of the Porthcawl contingent. Ray may have had an off night, granted, but he's still one of the best acts on the circuit and his ad-libbing skills are clearly at superhuman levels. There's nothing more enjoyable than watching him crush arrogant hecklers. And his podcast is better than Gervais's, easily.
A Fan of Ray Peacock - 04/06/2008
Well, the people of Porthcawl do get very cross if they don't like an act! Wishing kidney failure and impalement (not literal impalement - metaphorical impalement - whatever that means) on a light sabre. If I don't like an act, I generally try not to see them again. Having seen Ray Peacock a few times I have to say he's definitely the funniest act I've seen. It's true that he doesn't shy away from confronting an heckler or battling with an idiot but I'd say that 99% (probably more) of the time the behaviour of the audience member or members means that they completely deserve everything they get! Every time I see Ray his act is different and it's always hilarious - long may he continue!
Also not a fan of Ray Peacock - 03/06/2008
I can't speak for the "Not a fan of Ray Peacock" person but I'm guessing they were trying to put across just how bad he was if the kidney thing was the funniest thing he came out with - I too was there and was cringing in my seat for Mr Peacock. The host was great the warm up act was fantastic, the main act bombed and he knew it so he just went on a very abusive and offensive attack on people who had just lost interest. Although I did find it particularly amusing when he shouted to these fella's how jealous they were of him cause he was living the dream - in The Pavillion in Porthcawl ha ha! I have been to quite a few comedy club nights and have heard hilarious put downs but this rant was just offensive. The funniest thing he could have done would have been to impale himself (not literally) on his tax deductable light sabre.
Corry Shaw - 02/06/2008
The type of person who thinks someone elses kidneys failing is funny probably isn't the best judge on what good comedy is. Shame on you, sir. Ray Peacock is one of the finest comedians on the circuit today.

No Fan of Ray Peacock - 31/05/2008
I saw Ray unfortunately in Porthcawl last night where I watched a car crash of a routine and then a full on verbal assault on two men that had obviously had enough and were talking amongst themselves. An unnecessary and excessive use of the 'C' word followed though I must say the table fought back. The room may not have been with that table but there were definite pity applause going on as I wouldn't have liked to go against him. Either Ray had an off night or I just don't get his humour but I sat there thinking 'when is he getting off?'. The funniest thing all night in my eyes was his failed kidney and at that point he was being serious!
hayley yates - 01/04/2008
He was so funny tonight, I'm wondering if he really does do all those horrid things to Raji... I hope so they sounded funny
Ireland xx - 19/07/2007
You are a very funny man -. albeit a dysfunctional man. The only difference is that you are wiling to display it. This comes from a Raji James friend whom through him makes you more funny! You play each other off well on the podcasts
terry carpet - 10/07/2007
Great stuff big man! saw him in darwen theatre at the weekend, completely left the script to get a local lad named Gary up on stage for the whole show, great improv doing a Jeremy Kyle skit, he may have found a hidden gem with Gary as both were very funny. Ray, you're one sharp bastard
Ray Peacock - 01/07/2007
Dude you fucking rocked...although that may have just been the CP. Get in touch through the blogs section on the main part of the site, you helped me offend pretty much everybody in the room and that is a rare gift sir...
Jamie - 27/06/2007
I saw him last Saturday in Forest Hill, I'm the disabled guy. It quickly been one of the strangest evenings I've experienced, whose heard of a comedy club evening ending in an arm wrestling. One thing's for sure, for me and my friends his act will live long in the memory and left us almost on the floor laughing!
Del - 11/06/2007
Every time I see him he is brilliant and bang on the money with a natural ease and confidence and even though he is a headline act I feel he is somewhat under-rated and should be a lot bigger than he is.
colin the courtyard king - 20/03/2007
Ray was at the Courtyard Hereford in March and had his act ruined by idiots. What he did do was good and I would love to see him again. The Courtyard really should do something about its audiences which are getting worse by the gig.
Julian A Hirst - 11/02/2007
Saw Ray at The Comedy Cellar, Bracknell last Friday. It was like watching a masterclass in MCing. Brilliant! The ability to banter with an elderly audience member called Brian without resorting to cheap jibs at his expense and with such generousity that Brian received a standing ovation at the end of the evening is a rare talent indeed. I definitly what to see him again.
Matt - 02/12/2006
I have seen Ray three times and never laughed harder. If you\'re northern this guy will press evry button possible. If you're southern you'll glare in wonder at what the north is like.
Nik Hill - 28/11/2006
Just class. Did one of the best sets I've seen for ages a few weeks ago at the Guildhall, mostly seem to be improvised but the story of the light sabre was fantastic.Confident performer, likeable bloke, just great.
Clare Lorgan - 27/11/2006
Saw him in Brighton on Saturday night and he managed to deal with 300 of the most horrible drunken idiots I've ever seen in an audience. Anyone who has the balls to sing 'We are the Champions' and make it funny is alright by me. Will definitely come and see him next time. Fucking brilliant.
Gaz - 09/11/2006
Saw him last night in Gloucester. Absolutely hilarious and real value for money. In particular I was impressed by his ability to elicit, with little more than his sheer presence, a barrage of heckles from regular clubgoers who wouldn't ordinarily say boo to a goose. Needless to say, he had the perfect response to each and every heckle. Highly recommended.
Paddy - 09/10/2006
You'd still be very misguided to heckle him but if you've only seen him doing the more aggressive side of his comedy you've got to check out the new stuff he's doing. He generally plays it as himself now (albeit with the Ray Peacock stage name) and he's even funnier doing the more personal material. One of the most exciting, honest and brave comedians on the scene today. He's getting more comfortable with his own voice in his comedy and when this transition is complete he's going to be unstoppable. For a very funny breath of fresh air check out Ray as soon as you can.
Kirsty - 17/06/2006
Ee-by-gum lads - his a good 'un
Ashley - 22/12/2005
Ray bleeding Peacock what can I say? So very funny yet so very disturbed.
Lizzie - 25/10/2005
Looks like a farmer, sounds like a farmer, drinks like a fish. Although Peacock's style may not be unique and daring, his act is funny, loud, and great fun. He s got a great balance between audience banter, and story/joke telling. Definitely worth going to see if doing a gig near you.
Chester W - 26/09/2005
Measured a short girl on stage with a ruler at Hull University last night, to check if she was a dwarf so she could get a grant. This man is as good as it gets.
Justine - 25/06/2005
Saw him at The Stand in Glasgow last night and fell in love with him. Very very funny indeed, perhaps the funniest I ever saw. Did no material at all, instead opting to play with us and barter with the good natured heckling and the compere who had got his name wrong. Also revealed so much about his personal life and problems whilst maintaining the laughs which I found especially brave and touching. Am going again tonight to see Ray alone and have booked my tickets for his Edinburgh show this afternoon! Highly recommended
Steve Day - 04/03/2005
Saw him this past week at Cardiff University. He started off by laying into my mate who was clapping using his hand and shoulder so Ray just smashed into this guy verbally for about 20 mins solid. It was so funny. Then another guy from the audience gave away Ray's punchline for his final gag, which through a series of events ended up in the heckler running around in just his boxer shorts and trainers and ending the gig sharing the final joke with Ray. Over-ran the performance by about 20 mins, but is was one of those nights when everyone was having so much fun that Ray didn't mind performing longer for free, and those of us dying for a piss didn't give a shit because it was so hilarious.
John - 02/03/2005
Saw him yesterday at my Students Union, within 30 minutes he had a small ginger guy called Chris running around the club in only his boxer shorts, before forcing him to get on stage and finish the joke for him. Hilarious. Heckle if you dare.
Rich - 11/11/2004
Saw this fella arm wrestle a severely disabled guy who had been heckling him. Lambasted him with exceptionally dodgy insults about his disability but never at any stage patronised the guy - wickedly funny in the wrongest kind of way but pitched perfectly. Watching Ray stomp around the stage, arms aloft, gloating about beating a guy in a wheelchair in an arm wrestling contest was - put simply - the finest comedy moment I have ever seen. The guy loved it and stole the show by shouting later that he was going to sue Ray. Incredible.
Matt - 09/12/2003
Saw him in October and he was excellent. Came on the stage and spent the first ten minutes just ripping into different members of the audience - had everyone in stitches. Don't think your review does him justice at all.
Nik Hill - 24/10/2003
I've seen Ray twice now and on the second occasion managed to upset a heckler by an innocent remark that touched a nerve. She walked out; after that Ray reverted to Ian and treated the audience to another completely different person, the real Ian Boldsworth who was funny, educated and absolutely brilliant! Either one well worth seeing.
Daz - 06/10/2003
Saw him at Hull University last night. Taking the piss is defiately an art form which this man does incredibly well. More people should get the chance to see him. Bostin.
Front Row Frank - 26/09/2003
He is truly the funniest comedian I have seen in a long, long time. I haven't laughed like that since I don't know when. Not to be missed - he is brilliant.
Jane - 01/06/2003
I've seen him a few times recently and he has never failed to make me laugh. With a different set every time each full of sharp - but not particularly friendly - banter with the audience and hilarious material. I think he's great.
Ed - 30/05/2003
He rocks! Wish he would do more gigs.
John - 15/05/2003
Just witnessed the worst comedy display in history. How he gets work is a mystery that Hawking couldn't solve. His material was at best dated, the rest of the time he spent reading the jokes off an audience member's mobile whilst being outfunnied and outheckled by the audience. The worst 'comedian' that I've ever witnessed and I include shiny new open spots in that.
Gazza - 26/04/2003
Always suspected Ian was the most talented member of Big & Daft - Ray Peacock proves it. Never seen anyone deal better with hecklers.
