Mike is one of my favourite comics working today. Laid back but with some of the best material I have ever heard, just sublime. Always a pleasure and always funny.
This review really should be updated or ignored. Saw Mike for the first time this week at a new gig in Anglesey and he was brilliant. Really strong act with fantastic material.
Upon reading this Chortle review my expectations were understandably limited… yet Mike Newell’s armoury of skills is anything but limited. I saw him AFTER reading Chortle’s review and I can only beg you to take their review in the context of the date it was written. The act I saw yesterday (March ’09) was painfully sharp, with impeccable, nay, flawless timing. Mike had genuine warmth and bucketloads of likeability. You could literally feel the audience grow to not only love his pleasantly dry delivery, but also love his ability to pinpoint, with deadly accuracy, curious aspects of the human condition. Trust me, the next time your best friend says something unacceptably stupid, you will remember Mike Newell’s wonderfully sharp-eyed perspective on your friend’s folly. Superb comedian, nay, future great comedian!
I have seen Mike three times. Each time I must say he has been great. Wicked delivery and excellent material. Friendly stage presence and so easy to warm too. Would pay again to see the same routine.
I'd agree with the comments above. He played Alexanders in Chester last Saturday and was easily the best of the three acts.
This review is well out of date and way off the mark. Mike Newall is now a very good comic with a distinctive, laid back approach and material that's very much his own. My advice to promoters would be ignore this review and ask some circuit comics their opinion of him...chances are you'll book him and not regret it.
Well, he must have improved exponentially since this review because he did the open spot at Jongleurs Camden this Saturday and was both poised and funny, and not at all generic. I thought he was someone to look out for.
Saw Mike do a 15 minute open spot in Manchester and he was really good. Quirky stuff delivered with a relaxed stage presence; felt like we'd known him for ages.
