Minkley’s Night of Mirth 3

Ed Moore
It was a line-up many big charity benefits would envy – certainly enough to easily sell out Brighton’s Komedia.
Minkley’s Night of Mirth was the third such fundraiser in aid of The Samaritans and in memory of Oliver Minkley, a local musician and new-act comic who took his own life in 2010.
The biggest draw would surely have been Stewart Lee, here trying out material for the next series of his Comedy Vehicle on BBC Two. And if this set is anything to go by, he’s developing a more political edge, subjecting the party leaders and the entire system and its ‘illusion of dissent’ under the same intense, sarcastic scrutiny he’s previously applied to his fellow comics. Not that comedy itself escapes entirely, with the usual analysis of his own gags, and a typically iconoclastic attack on Bill Hicks, slaying a sacred cow many of his own followers will hold dear.

Lee was preceded by Rob Beckett, heavy on the ‘be lucky’ Sarf London patter, and ever-affable compere Ed Gamble, who couldn’t have been left in any doubt he was playing Brighton after engaging with one front-row punter who’s job was making windchimes, and another who worked in a chichi vegetarian coffee shop cutesily titled Wai Kika Moo Kau. [Why Kick A Moo Cow].
The second section was dominated by comedy hip-hop. Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer, reimagining hits from the second summer of love with his ukulele and cut-glass accent proved the perfect entertainment for a crowd who surely still remembered those happy rave days, but now prefer to sit down for their nights out. Abandoman also featured, with their ever-crowd-pleasing improvised rap What’s In Your Pocket? and a mini-epic based on the lives of two audience members. The stand-up pastrami in this rap sandwich was Michael Fabbri, incredulously puzzled about how a world he doesn’t quite fit into, could possibly function. Smug grammar Nazis, ITV schedulers or unchivalrous pornographers are among those he just doesn’t quite understand.
Kicking off part three, Nick Helm, fresh from the announcement that he’s to star in his own BBC Three series, didn’t quite behave with the decorum that a representative of Her Majesty’s broadcaster should. Few are as expert at exposing the raw desperation of stand-up as him, barking his dubious jokes with such raw aggression right into the faces of the terrified front row, thirsting for their approval and even love. His typically full-on finale was a visceral overload that closing act Mark Watson, with his amiable commentary of life, found some difficulty in following.

Absolutely brilliant closing in Palmers Green recently. Superb writing and able to tag so many jokes from excellent set-ups.
Bill - 07/12/2011
Saw Michael at Crack Comedy Wimbledon last Saturday. Was the best comedian on the night (included some very famous comics), and he had me doubled over with laughter on more than one occasion. This guy deserves to be on TV!
Debbie Wythe - 21/02/2011
Saw Michael at Woking New Victoria Theatre last night supporting Micky Flanagan. Hubby and I are real comedy groupies and probably go to a comedy gig once a week and have seen nearly 200. We were really impressed with Michael - his set was excellent, possibly one of the best and original acts we've seen and who gave us real belly laughs. Highly recommended! Keep up the good work!

Saw Michael at Woking New Victoria Theatre last night supporting Micky Flanagan. Hubby and I are real comedy groupies and travel far and wide for it. We probably go to a comedy gig once a week and have seen nearly 200 diferent comedians over the last few years. I have to say that we were really impressed with Michael. We genuinely thought his set was excellent - possibly one of the best and original acts we've seen and who gave us real belly laughs! Highly recommended! Keep up the good work!

Saw MF at Komedia in bath last night what a funny bloke best comedian by far
Rachel - 28/07/2010
By the far the funniest comic on the bill when we saw him at the glee club in Birmingham (as one heckler pointed out to the poor guy who tried to follow him). Very few people make me laugh out loud but he really had the whole audience howling.
Andy Jones - 12/02/2010
Just seen Michael in Exeter tonight. Brilliant. Had me crying several times. Best comedian by a long way on the night.
Stephen Hobbs - 01/01/2010
Yes, an accomplished intelligent comedian here. However, he does need to lose the rather crass menstruation material. Will blokes never learn? That apart, the best "new comedian" I've seen in a while.
Debbie - 25/10/2009
I saw Michael Fabbri at the Camberley theatre with a group of friends and family and we all found him the very funny. We loved the jokes about the job centre. He was by far the best act of the night and was one of the best comedians I have ever seen. I wish he could have had a longer set.
ds - 21/06/2009
Awful, nearly ruined the whole show at the Comedy Store Manchester tonight.
Keith B - 06/10/2008
Have always rated Michael very highly but he has improved immeasurably over the past couple of years. Stormed the headline spot in Southampton last night. Classy writing and performing. Lovely props too!
Phil O'Donnell - 20/08/2008
Saw MF at the Edinburgh festival this year and he was insanely funny although I believe most of his material on the night was "off the cough" as half the time he seemed to be checking his watch and using improv. I believe his anecdotes are probably the best I have ever seen and like the best comedians he manages to combine normal everyday situations which turn incredibly funny with a believable manner which the audience can relate to. Extremely funny and highly recommended.

Michael Fabbri works damn hard and he gets stronger, more original and more distinctive by the day. Michael sports an easy-going manner that wins you over the minute he walks on. He plays the loveable idiot at first but just when you're thinking it's all been done before he hits you with the harder stuff. But the approach is creative and offbeat rather than bogstandard life's-silly-and-I'm-clever. Even when he delves into smut or rattles off expletives it isn't an excuse for cheap titter, it's just another part of his kaleidoscopic vision. And as he works himself up he works us up too But there's a stern professionalism underpinning the outrageous banter. If there's one gripe it'd have to be the silly props bit. A tad gimmicky for a guy of this calibre, don'cha think?
Jo Phelan - 19/09/2007
Saw Michael compering a comedy night at the Cranleigh Arts Centre last week. He was much better value than a lot of established names that we've seen at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Mark - 17/08/2007
Saw Michael at the Pleasance Cellar last night - really really funny. Cheers Mate - great night!
Corry - 03/05/2007
Fantastic comedian, some wonderfully dark material and a superb stage presence. Go see.
Cole Parker - 29/04/2007
A solidly funny, inventive and natural comedian. Adapt at sussing out rooms and playing them well in accordance to the demographic present, acoustics et al. Consistant hitter & easy to work with.
Jamie - 02/05/2006
Very very funny - I was amazed he isn't more of an established name.
EW - 22/02/2006
I've seen him four times now and he just gets better and better...
Darrell - 09/12/2005
Insubstantial. Weak banter.
Lloyd Langford - 01/12/2005
Very good indeed.
Mike Manera - 21/11/2005
Fabbri is top class and capable of being a big star.
Dan - 10/10/2005
Brilliant act, hilariously funny
Anthony Mller - 20/07/2005
Fabbri is a natural performer with an inventive mind and will go far.
Cherry Green - 19/05/2004
Hilarious. I nearly weed
Jug - 17/05/2004
Sure is funny. Excellent prospect.
Peter - 17/05/2004
Excellent. I did my second gig with him on the same bill and he put me to shame. Very small audience, which makes it tough, as all the comics who were on before him will testify, but had everyone in stitches. Look forward to seeing him again.
Rick K - 13/05/2004
Michael's performance is pretty good and his writing keeps going from strength to strength.
Dave Skiner - 23/02/2004
Michael Fabbri rocks. If there is any justice in this world he will be huge.
Matt Price - 22/02/2004
I think Michael Fabbri is one of the best up and coming comics I've seen. Brilliantly crafted material that really matches his stage persona. The man is very talented - he will make a great professional comic.
Steve Hall - 17/11/2003
Hugely funny. Saw Michael for the first time in a while the other day and there wasn't a second of his routine that wasn't brilliant.
Fox Tucker - 22/07/2003
Saw him just last week at The Comedy Vibe in Great Yarmouth. He's a quick thinker whose manner endeared him to the audience better than most I've seen. Do not miss this lad if he plays your town. He's a headliner in the making
Chapeau - 09/07/2003
A very good comic indeed, particularly for the few short months he's been going. On each of the three occasions I've seen him do his act there's been a substantial swathe of fresh material that manages to be original, clever, accessible and hilariously funny all at once. His hunting and Question Time material struck me as particularly fine, and stayed with me for some time afer seeing them. Every time I've seen him he's been both the funniest, and the most memorable comedian on the bill.
