Radio 4 gets more Alone

BBC commissions full series of mid-life sitcom

The BBC has ordered a full series of its middle-aged house-share comedy Alone, starring Angus Deayton.

Radio 4 has commissioned a six-part series following the success of a pilot episode, The Only Way Is Ethics, last January.

The show also stars stand-up Bennett Arron and actors Abigail Cruttenden, from Not Going Out, Pearce Quigley from Detectorists and Kate Isitt from Coupling.

It is written by Moray Hunter of Absolutely and produced by the company he set up with the other members of the classic sketch show.

The BBC says the series – which will be taped in front of a studio audience next month – deals in ‘grief, loneliness, depression and delusion’.

Deayton plays Mitch a widower and part-time therapist who is looking to put his life back together now that he is single and living his with  unhappily divorced half-brother Will (Quigley). Also sharing the London flat are shy schoolteacher Ellie (Cruttenden), frustrated actress Louisa (Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd, Morris (Arron). Last year’s pilot also starred  Alastair Mackenzie as a womanisers who dated Ellie.
