Greenwich Comedy Festival: Ardal O'Hanlon etc

This was meant to be Sean Lock’s night. Instead the midway point of the Greenwich Comedy Festival was headlined by ‘Ireland’s number Sean Lock impersonator’, Ardal O’Hanlon. He, and the supporting bill, provided a night of solid, dependable laughs, even though they could never provide an event to stand out amid the other impressive line-ups organisers have pulled off this week.
Compere Arthur Smith’s shtick is familiar by now – but his ‘elder statesman’ status means the gags are now classic, not merely old. You might say the chances of him writing new jokes are as likely as a naked woman walking across his stage… yet both featured in his entertaining and occasionally poetic badinage.
For an appetiser, Kevin Eldon is something of a strong taste. His eccentric sensibilities, fast, fragmented style and inventive, knowing writing take a little getting used to, especially with a large, relatively mainstream crowd such as this. Yet his sheer commitment to his ideas – as diverse as the French Proclaimers or the portrayal of Hitler with the voice of Beatles producer George Martin – pull the audience along with him. Conventions of stand-up are thrown on to his bonfire, as he searches for a catchphrase or gets physically demonstrative of his off-kilter thoughts. The set is all over the place – but in a good way.

Rap improvisers Abandoman are a much easier sell, and here performed with bass, keys, drums and a two-man brass section backing up the core duo of Rob Broderick and James Hancox. They have their established formats, such as the ‘what’s in your pocket?’ rap based around objects the audience hold aloft, and Broderick thinks fast enough to come up with spur-of-the-moment couplets for them all. And the audience member whose childhood dream was to be a bodypopper, and now wanted to know how Michael McIntyre came up with his material, proved a godsend when it came to ad libbing a short hip-hop musical. The autotuned spirit of Kanye West and the anti-establishment ethos of Rage Against The Machine are evoked in other songs, giving some variation to their routine and providing a funky bassline to invigorate the crowd.
O’Hanlon’s set was based around the familiar feelings of being rather overwhelmed and quietly frustrated by life, often because of the unreliability of those around him, even though he’s well aware of his own failings, especially when it comes to traditional ideas of masculinity. He has a quirky turn of phrase and evocative imagry to describe all this, so even when the comedy seems a little too straightforward – such as his disappointment in receiving a charity birthday gift of a Peruvian pear tree – he charms through it all.
Although these are largely domestic gripes, the former Father Ted star shows a glint of real edge on the topic of paedophile priests, his cold steel puncturing the otherwise fluffy exterior. Other topical points about image-obsessed politicians or Ireland’s financial woes might not be informed by the same genuine dismay, but he offered quirky takes on familiar ideas. Perhaps there’s more of a political comic trying to burst through his Everyman demeanour.

Buxton Opera House, 8/10/10. A very funny night, a tough crowd who could be in need of some national newspapers and a visit away from the village just to bring them up to speed, however he had them wanting more, the 2nd half of the show was top drawer. he is a must see.

Underbelly gig on 25th June was dire. I appreciate that Ardal wants to separate himself from his not-so-bright TV characters but he hadn't got the material to back it up. Jibes against the French, Germans et al reek of xenophobia. The whole set seemed incredibly lazy. Disappointing.

Ardal, please return to your body and resume My Hero - It stinks without you!

i really love the way he makes the charaters seem real. I have only ever seen him in Father Ted until recently when I found out about My Hero. I love the programme, he is a great actor
Prior - 16/12/2006
One of the best. A legend
Vince Cook - 19/02/2006
Extremely funny comedian, I've seen him live twice and both times he was fantastically funny, top class act
Gareth - 10/11/2005
Disapointingly average. He seemed to lack any confidence, and any memory for his act.
John Gold - 28/10/2005
Went to his show in Glasgow on his current tour. One of the best stand up performances I've seen. Fantastic delivery and his 'grumpy' middle aged man persona will have legs
Helen - 13/10/2005
Saw him at the Lowry - slightly disappointed., but I still love him - even if it is just because of his hilarious facial expressions and gorgeous Irish accent. Also, I agree with Paul - £17 a throw - and at my show he was only on for 55 minutes. Lower your prices or stay on longer!
Maura - 04/10/2005
I loved Ardal in Father Ted. Dougal was my favorite character, hands down. I also caught him on Comedy Central and that one Whose Line is it... he was hilarious
Paul - 03/10/2005
Saw him tonight and he was very funny but at £17 a ticket I expected more tham the 75 minutes his act lasted
Warren Mitchell - 31/07/2005
Funny stand up. Doubt he'll ever do enough to life himself above his Dougal role. My Hero was beyond cringeworthy.
Waheed Muzamil - 10/07/2005
He was hilarious on Jack Dee at the Apollo. Best comedian in years.
John D - 09/07/2005
I caught Ardal's set on television last night. I expected to be disappointed - how could his stand-up match the genius of Father Ted? - but within minutes was cackling with joy. Shame, though, about the car crash that was My Hero. Why did he ever star in it?
Siobhan - 29/12/2004
I must admit I'm not a huge fan of My Hero, but it's not entirely unwatchable. Father Ted, however, is a whole other story - refreshing, hilarious, and strangely realistic despite all the mad storylines. I've never seen an episode of Father Ted I didn't lov. Haven't seen that much of his stand up, but I did catch him on telly supporting Jack Dee at the Apollo, and he did manage to raise a few giggles out of me.
Love Goddess - 09/11/2004
Without a doubt and without reservation, my favourite comedian. I didn't even recognize him as the Father Ted character later when I saw him doing stand up comedy about the inflatable book and the wee small boxes.
Jayne Gull - 07/10/2004
Saw his stand-up act in Paris earlier this year and he was fantastic.
Charlie Thomson - 23/09/2004
Father Ted was fantastic, My Hero was abysmal, and the stand up is somewhere in-between.
Michael Joynt - 24/07/2004
I've seen his show recorded in New York on Comedy Central and it was the funniest show I've seen in a long time, I never laughed so hard watching standup. His is one of the few acts I can watch over and over again and its just as funny as the first time I watched it.
Dom Kingsmill - 15/08/2003
Father Ted is beyond compare, I have enjoyed Ardal O'Hanlon's other stuff, My Hero has at times been a little weak but it's amiable enough, he does bring a likeability to his roles and performances which masks any shortcomings in the scripts. His stand-up act is very good and well worth seeing.
Catherine - 26/07/2003
Incredibly funny and attractive man, his stand-up made me positively breathless with laughter.
Francis Rogan - 04/07/2003
On the Patrick Kiltey show, now I'm a fan. O'Hanlon displayed a gifted humor combined with a thoughful, intelligent nature. Especially he showed a kindness and an admirable respect for women when Kitley was confronting a female guest with inappropriate questions and remarks. Very refreshing and most impressive.
Paul Rimmer - 26/04/2003
Brilliant on Father Ted, the best ever sitcom.Saw him doing stand up and he was hilarious
Charmaine - 10/03/2003
Absolute comic genius. Love him to bits. Very talented and sexy
- 03/02/2003
Since I'm from America I've had the pleasure of seeing him on Father Ted, but I've also seen one episode of My Hero when I was staying in a hotel in London. It was hilarious. The man's a comic genius!
Hank - 16/11/2002
I also live in America and saw him on Comedy Central Presents... and in those thirty minutes I don't think I have laughed harder or louder. I'm going to have to check out his other shows.
