American broadcaster CNN has released the trailer for the new biopic I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not.
Billed as ‘authorised yet unfiltered’, the film takes its title from Chase’s biography and the catchphrase he used when hosting Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.
The comic has starred in a string of classic comedies, including Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Spies Like Us and Three Amigos, but also has a reputation for being difficult, if not downright monstrous, to work with. Or in the broadcaster’s euphemistic words, he is a ‘complex and contradictory human being.’
Culture journalist Matt Solomon once wrote: ‘Not everyone hated him, just the people who’ve worked with him.’
Director Marina Zenovich said: ’I've always loved a challenge, and Chevy certainly offered one. I wanted to understand the real person behind the guarded, conflicted man we’ve often seen on camera. Beneath the bravado, I found someone deeply human, with layers of humour and emotion that make him far more complex than his public persona may suggest.’
Contributors include Dan Aykroyd, Beverly D’Angelo, Goldie Hawn, Lorne Michaels, Ryan Reynolds, and Martin Short – as well as Chase and his family.
Howard Owens, of production company Propagate Content added: ‘Chevy Chase is one of the most singular comedic talents of our time - a performer whose genius helped define an era of entertainment. Marina Zenovich’s film doesn’t just revisit that legacy; it reveals the man behind it, in all his contradictions and humanity.’
It airs in the States on New Year's Day. No news yet on a UK broadcast.
