Original Review |

I went to see the show at Hammersmith Apollo on Sept 10th. It was a big disappointment. There is no point comparing Science to his previous stand-ups which were, in my opinion, brilliant. If one insists to compare Animals to Science the Book of Genesis passage from the former is in a completely different league than the Noah's ark bit from Science. I could not believe that it was Ricky on the stage: 1. the comedy was poor 2. he is not all that fat anymore. Michael, September 2010 |

This review is so accurate and it was written a year ago! I watched it last night (6th Sep 2010) at the Hammersmith Apollo and it was pretty boring! I might as well have gone to the local comedy club! Much lower than the high standards he usually sets and I feel a little ripped off! Alan, September 2010 |

The Office, Extras and, above all, Invention of Lying have demonstrated how gifted this man is. In fact, I can't think of a cleverer Funny Brit since Monty Python's Terry Jones, but he should give the stand-up a break. I, too, found his funny but all-too-often puerile act at the Brighton Centre overly reliant on look-at-me vaingloriousness and schoolboy shock-value - not least the Ken Dodd- fat fan wanking shtick. I wonder whether Doddy would sue? Nor did the self-promotion slip down easily. Having one's announcer introduce you as The Man Who Changed The World is all right for Bob Dylan; asking him to reel off your CV when you are merely Ricky Gervais smacks of arrogance rather than self-satire. I'm afraid the boy seems to be, as they say, a little too up himself. Rob Steen, August 2010 |
|
Funny how he likes taking the piss out of fat people so much when he has the physique of a bin-liner full of porridge. Steve Moss, May 2010 |
|
Went last night! Definitely recommend. Gervais is funny all the way through, maybe not as good as Animals but a great night, even the warm-up act is very funny, well worth the money! R.Mitchell, April 2010 |
|
Bar the penultimate paragraph, i'd say this review was spot on. Very funny in places but lacked the structure and writing to make it memorable. Thought the Noah bit was a pale imitation of his glorious bible routine in Animals. Dan Jeoffroy, April 2010 |

I went to see Ricky Gervais in Oxford on 24th March, and can honestly say what a waste of money. I would never go again and am frankly disgusted I paid all that money. He was not funny, his jokes were crap and old, he seemed to just fluke his way through. He is not a funny man and needs to take a good look at himself before opening his mouth. Do not go. Saeeda Imaan, March 2010 |

Saw the Brighton show and thought that it was a waste of money. Jokes about Hiroshima and child abuse? He was lazy and crude not funny... Bryony, December 2009 |

I saw him last night in Brighton and thought that the show was a great disappointment. Rude, crude but not funny. I thought the audience laughter was most muted compared to the Rob Brydon gig I attended recently. he got a standing ovation at the Brighton Centre, Ricky's was lukewarm at most. He needs to polish up and change his material. I have nothing against his crude language or offensive jokes - any target is fair game. Just it wasn't funny. Waste of money before xmas Bill Ridley, December 2009 |

I saw Ricky Gervais in Brighton last night and thought he was really funny. After reading some of the comments on here I was slightly worried that he would be rubbish but I think some of the material has been re-worked (no Enola Gay or mention of heroin being morish). Noah's Ark is an easy target yes, but it's also very very funny and done in a very Gervais kind of way (which is kind of what you want at a Ricky Gervais show). Loads of material was near the knuckle but that's what we were all there for. It makes me laugh when people write that they didn't enjoy the show because he takes the piss out of fat people, gay people, paedos, drug addicts etc. What the hell did you expect?!! The support was excellent too. Quality gig! Richard, December 2009 |

I saw the show last night, thought it was excellent even the warm up act was great, don't get the people moaning about Ricky's gags why go see him if your going to get wound up about his jokes?? you know the things he's going to come out with, take it on the chin and have a laugh! Ricky's awesome can't wait for the next show! katy, December 2009 |

Saw the show last night in Brighton and I was in tears. I very much agree with the reviewer below; I feel sorry for critics, the way this critic writes about Science is as if he made himself sit through it with the aim of not enjoying it. What I found different with Science from the other shows was that Gervais made constant references to critics and 'jobsworth' types who complain about bad language on TV etc. His ego is still very much there and rightly so. Please keep it coming Ricky! Jamie, December 2009 |

I think Ricky was great, I don't understand critics and I never will, seeing the negative in everything must really make enjoying something very difficult. I really enjoyed this show, absolutely brilliant stuff. I always keep up to date with his blog and to think he's backwards and forwards to the States all of the time, it's a wonder he's managed to find time to put the show together. Why do people think that comedy has to be hard to find? It doesn't make it better if you think more effort has gone into. Using the book of noah was very funny, and the bit about the autograph hunters was fantastic. I don't know what you guys expect, I guess some people are never happy. Dave, December 2009 |

Thought £30 was more than a fair price for the best comedian working at the time. the only minor issue i have about the show is that it follows a similar formula to the 3 previous shows, with the gags at the expense of fat people, God and animals. not that that is a complaint, Ricky knows how to work these 3 things very well. All in all I can't wait for the next show and couldn't care less if the formula stays the same. Bert, December 2009 |

"offering a selfish take on the charity Christmas gifts that relies on a very familiar attitude, though the gags are Gervais’s own."... That's not always true. The joke about giving an African family a goat for Xmas was actually discussed by Karl Pilkington on an old podcast they did together, so that's not his own material at all! Kev, November 2009 |
|
All you people are talking crap, he was Ricky Gervais through and through. It was very funny, very below the belt but it worked. I always say if you are easily offended don't bloody watch comedians!! well done Ricky you're ace, keep up the awesome work. :) Fi, November 2009 |

Watched him tonight in Bournemouth. On stage at 8.30 off at 9.27. The material was extremely poor, and there just seemed to be a huge void in comedic craft. The goat sketch was a complete lift of Karl Pilkingtons comments from a podcast (which he mocked at the time) and I'm sorry but jokes about scooping up underweight heroin addicts with a needle cross a line that shouldn't be crossed. No more for me Ricky, too lazy and self obsessed for my liking. Don Gibson, November 2009 |

I was looking forward to seeing him in Oxford - having scored four tickets at £60 each... but I was bitterly disappointed. Right from the hopelessly unfunny opening video, most of it was third rate - if he has left out wanking, paedophilia and gay sex, he would have been left with about five minutes material. It used to be funny to say rude words - today there are no words left, so comedians will have to resort to being funny. I had a horrible feeling that Gervais actually does love himself and really believes he is the best comic around. As he might say "no you're not, your rubbish" ... a line which never was funny. He claimed to be trying out material - well, that's what rehearsals are for, not a full audience of people paying far too much for a half baked effort. Sorry, last time I pay to see you Ricky, and worse - I don't like the idea of you any more. Peter, October 2009 |
|
Says in the review that Gervais recycles Russell Brand’s "famous" line about heroin being ‘a bit morish’, but I think you'll find that Harry Hill originally did that joke in the early nineties before either of those two even began their comedy careers! Bill Ryan, October 2009 |
|
Saw him in Portsmouth on the Science tour last night and was impressed. Was expecting the worst after reading some pretty bad reviews but it was actually a really good show. Guess all the press caught him on a bad night. There were lots of typical Gervais stories and anecdotes, and an excellent analysis of a Noahs Ark children's storybook. Gervais was fire on this particular show, which was the 2nd show of the tour, so I'm sure as it continues it will get better and better, just in time for a DVD filming. Only thing I will say is the opening video seemed a bit cheap, still funny though. Catch it if you can - this one beats Fame hands down. Daniel A, October 2009 |

Just seen the gig in Pompey. Dreadful! Lazy and not very funny! Paul, October 2009 |

I am a huge Ricky Gervais fan and I have just seen him in Glasgow tonight. In for half 7 out for half 9. I was more impressed with his warm up act. Don't get me wrong, it was good but I've read the review for the "15 quid gig" and the 30 pounds one was exactly the same. I was disappointed with the material, it started of brilliantly and just seemed to simmer out. I have been excited about this for months and I feel very let down as his other stand ups (which I've seen live and loved) are amazing. I'm a gutted fan to say the least Caron, August 2009 |
|
I agree with Rod. The show was rubbish, the £15 that Ricky Gervais thought was cheap was more than it was worth. At the end he said thanks for you help in deciding what he'll use for the tour and joked that he might use half of the content. If I was him, I'd re-write the whole thing. Eleanor, August 2009 |

I was at this very show and it was so disappointing. I know this is only a 'work in progress' gig but the material was so thin and the show so short I really wonder where his 'Science' show is going to come from. But, other than the length, what was most disappointing about this performance was the recycling of old material. E.g. He mentions the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, the 'Enola Gay'. Now, I may be a sad obsessed fan, but I can tell you he used that exact same gag in a sketch on the 11 O'clock show in 1998 - 11 years ago. And amidst the wanking gags and shock tactics that any average club comedian will give you, are very few actually clever or insightful comic moments. This is his 4th stand-up show in six years and other than the fact this tour will coincide nicely with his film coming out later in the year, I don't know why he feels the need to do this show. Particularly when he's going back 11 years to find some material and when his 'cornerstone' is a children's book. Not exactly a hard target. Not exactly a great show either. Rod, April 2009 |
