Late Night Gimp Fight – Fringe 2009
Live Review

Late Night Gimp Fight rated 2/5

These gimps may very well want to keep their faces covered after some of the sketches in a show that’s lively, noisy, boisterous – but rarely as inventive as it thinks it is.

Many scenes end with a physical bundle, often thanks to the repeatedly returning character of a WWE wrestler, stripping to the waist and starting fake fights. Indeed, they like getting their kit off – a dinosaur in a low-budget re-creation of Jurassic Park is a man in his undies, as is a disturbing office colleague in another scene

This broad, unsubtle physicality continues as they enact a pop video Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse Of The Heart, which involves a bloke dry-humping another bloke in a frock from behind, then the positions are reversed. The gimp theme is returned to a few times over the 50 minutes, too, and there’s some references to porn.

You may think this sounds hilarious – and indeed much of the audience whooped and hollered and stamped their feet through such base material, to such an extent that I suspected they must have been either friends of the five performers, or very, very drunk.

It largely left me cold, for although you can detect an easy likeability behind the big-performance bluster of all those on stage, their writing is decidedly crude, aiming for lowest common-denominator. But maybe I should have guessed that from the title. Gimps aren’t subtle.

God imagine having that reviewer as a mate *shudder* what a miserable buz kill, the guy needs to cheer up... how ironic. These guys are the funniest thing I've seen in ages. It takes a lot for me to laugh out loud and I was roaring in places. Crude and fun in at times, witty and clever at others, great balance and overall pretty hilarious.

Saw these guys at SO TV's Noostar comedy night. They get booked for it quite often and the reason me and my mates go. I could not disagree with this review more.

Alexa Jones, January 2010

Well the comments show that this reviewer is completely out of touch. How long will Chortle persist in employing this idiot's views?

Tim, September 2009

Have to say I disagree completely with this review. This was a fun, witty and entertaining late night sketch show and when I went the audience loved it. I guess it's just more popular with audiences than reviewers who aren't up for that kind of thing. I'll be keeping my eye out for these gimps!

Nick Fuller, September 2009

I've just got to agree with the other comments on here. This is a very harsh review. It was late night, fun comedy, not highbrow writing but it had a clued up, savvy festival audience in stitches.

What a nonsense review. You know nothing. And four stars for the much inferior other sketch group that don't deserve a name check. You were clearly grumpy and have taken it out on the biggest crowd pleasing surprise hit of the festival. What a shame, I used to think you knew what you were talking about. See the Gimps.

Couldn't agree less with the review. I thought the show struck the perfect balance between dark material and silly fun. The Total Eclipse sketch had a great twist. I saw it sober, twice, and thoroughly enjoyed it both times.

Alex Hammond, September 2009

So, as the review shows, not sophisticated enough, but we thought it was hilarious, and no the audience was filled with randoms, not friends. We had a laugh, and we will be following the gimps in the future, well done boys

James Mccay, September 2009

Funniest thing I have seen in a long time. Wasn't sure when it first started but my cheeks hurt and I cried laughing at some bits.

Sue, August 2009

Their Jurassic Park take off is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Go and watch them..... now.

Abi, August 2009

Saw these guys randomly at the Canal Cafe and thought they were fantastic! Very slick and wonderfully silly! Hope Edinburgh loves them as much as Little Venice!
