Show Rating:Idiots of Ants 2008 rated 3/5

The Idiots are back for their second Fringe outing with another offering of sketches ranging from the sublime to the substandard.

Consistency is the problem here. There are a handful of moments of unadulterated brilliance but they are all too often punctuated with tired, uninspired ideas. It can be infuriating to watch, being treated to glimpses of genius then having it snatched away with a hack, unfunny and possibly libelous John Leslie joke.

The performances are consistent. Benjamin Wilson, James Wrighton, Elliott Tiney and Andrew Spiers are all incredibly talented actors who drip enthusiasm for each skit they perform but the writing often lets them down with sketches fading rather than hitting a natural climax.

James Wrighton produces the outstanding performance of the show with a stunning repeated sketch of a stand-up comic performing his first gig. I won’t give the joke away but it is worth the ticket price just to see this section alone. Inspired, clever and achingly funny.

As good as it was, it increased the frustration, knowing they are so capable of such skillful craftsmanship while having to endure the turgid padding of four boys giggling at manginas and bumming a Muppet.

They need to become more consistent with the quality of their writing and return with a show that lives up to their potential if they are ever to be anything other than an average sketch troupe with a couple of good lines.

Very 'knowing' idiots indeed. High energy, great interplay, original and funny ideas in a show that builds unexpectedly. Definitely more hits than misses in quick fire sketches.
