Trev and Simon trade in puerile schoolboy humour, atrociously low-grade puns and childishly basic insults - and well they know it, revelling in the very stupidity of their material.

And, for a while, the sheer unrestrained force of that sense of fun does actually overcome any hard-hearted cynicism about the poor quality of their act.

In these moments, there's a certain pleasure in getting swept along with the flow, despite your better judgment.

But it can never last, and the show collapses to its inevitable fate, as the tide of dismal gags just becomes too strong, overwhelming their likeability.

Sustaining this sort of humour for an hour is simply impossible. They might get away with it for ten minutes - but it's all very threadbare for a full-length show.

How many times can you call someone 'monkey boy' and it still be funny? Some would say the answer's zero - but it is certainly a lot fewer than the number of times Trev and Simon attempt.

They try to inject a bit more life into proceedings with some audience participation - including recreating The Jam using a motley collection of punters. But by this stage, the harder they try the more desperate it seems.

At heart they are still children's entertainers, jollying along mindless games with an unfeasibly over-the-top sense of fun. At the risk of sounding a real curmudgeon, it's time they grew up a bit, and put some substance behind the performance.
