Achtung Pal!
Note: This review is from 2008
The premise of this story is that Nazis have occupied Scotland and the Dundonians have to try to liberate the country. It is obvious that someone has put a fair amount of effort into bringing this production together, with its extensive cast, technical cues and numerous props and costumes, but it is just not enough. Save for male lead Jordan Dunbar and Niamh Spurr who plays Miss Murphy, the majority of the cast stumble over lines and make unconvincing actors.
The storyline is flimsy, a point proved when is deviates massively down a bizarre and ridiculous tangent of animal transvestitism.
There are technical issues with video refusing to play, making an act of the play confusing and pointless. There are problems with the cast’s memories and their delivery as they fluff lines, and there are severe difficulty with the accents with some of the worst Dundonian this Dundonian has ever heard. Even thought the students are from the University of Dundee.
By halfway through the play several people have walked out and the rest are covering their ears every time a there is a glimpse of Commandant Shouty. Very rarely should a play come with a health warning but if you have delicate ears or a propensity for migraines avoid this. Painful, painful, painful.
