NextUp seeks new comedians

On-demand service to film Fringe shows

Comedy-on-demand service NextUp is seeking comedians with Edinburgh Fringe shows to film next month.

The company has booked the Oran Mor – a short trip away in Glasgow – to tape the specials for release on its platforms.

NextUp is a Netflix-style service that charges subscribers £3.50 a month for access to its entire catalogue of stand-up shows, and adds new programming each week. Shows are also available on a pay-per-view basis on platforms such as iTunes and Google Play.

Current acts on offer include Tony Law, Bill Hicks, Ed Byrne, Simon Munnery, Gina Yashere, Colin Hoult and  Marcel Lucont.

For comedians, the company pays to film the shows professionally and shares any revenue 50:50 once that cost is recouped. Comics are also allowed to sell copies of the show on DVD or memory sticks after shows without NextUp taking a cup.

A NextUp spokesman said of next month’s filming: ‘We’ve booked a top production team and the beautiful and lively venue Oran Mor to host the sets. This will ensure that we have a controlled environment where we are able to deliver high-quality productions while acts are performing at the Fringe.

‘Our mission is to champion the most original and exciting stand-up comedy content in the world, and to drive new audiences and incremental revenues to the talent who create it.’
