Trust set up to help new comedy writers

In honour of Reggie Perrin creator David Nobbs

Fans and friends of Reginald Perrin creator David Nobbs have set up a trust in his name to support new comedy writing.

Famous names including Barry Cryer and Michael Palin are backing the new scheme, which hopes to raise enough money to fund an annual competition.

Palin said: ‘I knew David Nobbs from the very earliest days – when we were both struggling comedy writers.

‘Throughout my subsequent career, David was extraordinarily helpful and supportive. I’m delighted, through his name, to continue his help and support for new writing talent.’

Nobbs, who died in August last year at the age of 80, is best known for The Fall And Rise of Reginald Perrin and A Bit Of A Do. But in a long career, which started on the satirical show That Was The Week That Was, he also worked with Kenneth Williams, Frankie Howerd, Les Dawson and The Two Ronnies as well as writing several novels.

Journalist Mary O’Hara is the chair of the David Nobbs Memorial Trust, which has been set up by a group of by comedy producers and performers with the blessing of his family.

She said: ‘Getting a foothold as a writer, be it in sketch, book writing or sitcom, can be tough, so we’ve decided to try to help those starting out. Our plan is to run a competition in David’s name and award a modest bursary that could help winners set aside some precious hours for writing.’

The trust has opened an online crowdfunding appeal for fans to donate and plans to launch its first competition in the autumn.

Nobbs’ widow Susan is honorary president if the trust with Barry Cryer as a patron, TV producer Steve Doherty as secretary and performer Margaret Cabourn-Smith as a ‘roving trustee’.
