Craig Campbell claims a digital first

Craig Campbell is to be the first comedian in Britain to release a stand-up ‘DVD’ only via iTunes.

The Canadian comic has landed a deal with 4DVD to put out the recording of his last tour, Craig Campbell Live, digitally.

It will be released in May 13 – well away from the crowded pre-Christmas slot when most DVDs are are released in the hope of catching the gift market. But as a download, it is more likely to be bought by fans for themselves.

4DVD’s Pippa Simmons said: ‘The digital platform allows us to provide up-and -coming comedians the ability to reach a whole new audience through home entertainment, and we are excited to be releasing the first of its kind.’

The ‘up-and-coming’ Campbell will next year celebrate 25 years as a stand-up, and is currently touring the UK with fellow Canadians Stewart Francis and Glenn Wool, as The Lumberjacks.

Increasingly comics are their material as direct downloads direct, following the trail blazed by Louis CK, but Campbell’s release is different in that it still involves one of the major comedy DVD labels.
