Plans for Dad's Army film – with female Mainwaring

Moves are afoot to make a movie version of Dad’s Army –  featuring a female Captain Mainwaring.

The sitcom’s co-creator, Jimmy Perry, told the show’s official fan club that a script is in the early stages of development.

The 89-year-old will not be writing the script but told his audience that it had been suggested a woman play the lead role of the troop’s commander. The news was greeted by groans, according to the Dad’s Army Appreciation Society website.

Talks on a possible movie went ahead after Perry secured the rights from the widow of his long-term writing partner David Croft, who died last year at the age of 89 Perry’s agent confirmed discussions were ongoing, but said no studio has yet signed up.

Dad’s Army was previously made into a film in 1971, which was a commercial hit but not a critical one.
