Phill Jupitus joins Chumbawumba show

Musical role for Buzzcocks star

Phill Jupitus is to appear in a new musical alongside anarchist musical group Chumbawamba.

Big Society! A Music Hall Comedy is set in a 1910 variety theatre, where the cast are fighting for survival against the ‘shock/horror’ reporting of a corrupt and moralistic newspaper, The Double Standard.

The show, written by Chumbawamba guitarist Boff Whalley, opens in the apt City Varieties music hall in Leeds in January. It promises to be ‘part theatre, part show, part timely rant’ set in ‘a time when trumped-up public schoolboys ran the country and when corruption and sleaze riddled the corridors of power’. As if.

This will be the third musical theatre role for 49-year-old Jupitus in little over two years. In October 2009 he joined the West End cast of Hairspray, and he played King Arthur in the touring version of Monty Python musical Spamalot this year.
