Rhod Gilbert was rushed to hospital last night after gashing his hand open at the Chortle Awards.
The BBC One star needed nine stitches after breaking a wine glass in the press area of the event. The glass punctured 1.5cm into his flesh, causing profuse bleeding as shocked journalists and comics looked on.
Katy Brand, who was also being interviewed at the time, came to his aid and arranged for first aid at the venue, before his agent arranged for him to be taken to casualty.
The stars on stage at the Floridita venue in Central London continued to give out and receive awards, unaware of the drama happening just yards away.
Gilbert – who had earlier presented the best newcomer award to Diane Spencer – reappeared at the event following his visit to A&E, his hand bandaged and badly swollen, but able to continue the party into the early hours.We were interviewing Richard Bacon backstage when the incident happened, as this footage shows:
