Rained off

Monsoons hit opening of Mumbai Comedy Store

Tonight’s planned opening of the new Mumbai branch of the Comedy Store has been called off after the roof sprung a leak.

Monsoon rainwater leaked through the roof of the sixth-floor venue and onto the floor of the auditorium last night, prompting last-minute repairs.

The venue will now open tomorrow night instead, with free shows over the first weekend,

Owner Don Ward said: ‘The show must go on. I’ve opened up eight clubs and not one has opened on time.

But he told the local press: ‘I warn you, no more free shows so you’d better make the most of it.’

The club, India’s first dedicated comedy venue, was originally due to open six months ago, but building delays caused the opening date to be pushed back – and into monsoon season.

Although the 300-seat auditorium will be opening this weekend, the bar, café and restaurants will not open until later. Official opening night is now July 3.
