Deacon lands Radio 1 job

Comic's new Sunday night show

Former Chortle Student Comedy Award winner Tom Deacon has been signed up to host his own show on Radio 1.

The 23-year-old stand-up will host a weekly show from 7pm to 9pm every Sunday, immediately after the Chart Show.

Deacon has been presenting the daily 5:19 Show on the BBC’s Switch youth internet channel since 2008, the highlights of which go out BBC Two on Saturday afternoons.

His new Radio One show will keep the 5:19 title, despite the different timeslot, it was announced today.

The comic said: ‘I’m really excited to have my own 5:19 Show on Radio 1, I just can’t wait to get in the studio and start having fun.’

Ben Cooper, deputy controller of Radio, said: ‘Our Sunday line-up offers something for all of our younger audiences.’

Deacon’s show starts on March 28, as part of a wider shake-up of the Sunday night schedules.

Chortle's hunt for the best student comedian of 2010 – the title Deacon won three years ago – will be launched soon.
