Heart op for Williams

Rest of tour cancelled

Robin Williams has postponed the rest of his American tour after it was announced that he was to have heart surgery.

The 57-year-old comic will have an operation to have his aortic valve replaced – and hopes to restart his Weapons Of Self Destruction tour in the autumn.

He had already called off four shows in Florida earlier this week, amid reports he had complained of shortness of breath. It later transpired that he had been admitted to intensive care.

In a statement on his website, Williams said: ‘I’m so touched by everyone’s support and well wishes. This tour has been amazing fun and I can’t wait to get back out on the road after a little tune-up.’

Williams has been on tour with his gruelling 80-date show since September, and it was due to continue until a five-night Broadway run next month, which sold out within ten minutes.

His publicist would not say when or where the heart operation – considered a routine procedure by cardiac surgeons –  will take place.
