New sitcom for Kelsey Grammer

ABC pilots recession-based show

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer has signed up for a new sitcom.

The 53-year-old is to appear a new pilot for America’s ABC network in which he plays a tycoon who has to readjust to being a family man after losing his powerful job.

The untitled show, which producers hope will resonate with recession-hit families, is being written by Tucker Crawley, who previously worked on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Grammer has struggled to find a hit since Frasier ended four years ago, with his TV newsroom-based sitcom Back To You cancelled after 17 episodes.

The actor was also set to star in American remake of BBC Two sitcom Roman’s Empire – about the extended family of a self-made millionaire - but ABC decided not to pick up the idea.

Grammer has also recently been cast as a teacher in the upcoming big-screen remake of Fame, where he will star alongside Bebe Neuwirth – who played Frasier’s humourless ex-wife Lilith.
