Art of Edna

Barry Humphries' online art project

Barry Humphries is to go head to head with his alter ego, Dame Edna Everage, in a battle to determine who is the better artist.

Humphries, who is recovering from near-fatal peritonitis following a new year appendix operation, studied art at university and has long been a serious painter of landscapes.

The new project, which goes online tomorrow, will allow visitors to compare work he created as himself with a more flamboyant self-portrait of the housewife superstar.

As well as voting on which they prefer, internet users will also be free to alter the artwork as they see fit. by adding different borders, sparkling or glitter effects or even applying special effects to the whole piece

'This will give people the chance to interfere with my paintings, something I often want to do to other people's work when I see it hung in a bad frame in a gallery,' Humphries said.

‘I love audience participation in my shows and in the world of creative art I fully support any opportunity to get people involved and to inspire them to find their own creative ability.’

Humphries's own offering on the site, London on Sea shows a sunny Australian beach with a gloomy London in the middle distance.

The project, backed by hardware manufacturer HP, will be here from tomorrow
