Comedy triple for BBC radio

Byrne heads new commissions

BBC radio has commissioned a raft of new comedy shows from Jason Byrne, Ivan Brackenbury and The Penny Dreadfuls.

Byrne has landed a full series of his show Jason Byrne Is… for Radio 2 following the success of a pilot episode recorded in November.

That show, in which the Irish stand-up investigated health and medicine, will now be broadcast as part of the full series.

Radio 2 has also ordered a pilot show from Ivan Brackenbury to be transmitted later this year. Brackenbury – the creation of DJ and comedian Tom Binns – was nominated for the if.comedy award at Edinburgh last year for his spoof hospital radio roadshow.

Finally, Edinburgh-based comedy group The Penny Dreadfuls have landed a second series of their Edwardian-themed sketch programme for digital channel BBC 7.

The news comes before the first series of The Penny Dreadfuls Presents The Brothers Faversham has even aired, with episode one going out tonight.

All the shows are being made in-house at the BBC, under producer Julia McKenzie.
