Gervais in privacy row

Ricky sets lawyers on to local paper

Ricky Gervais has set his lawyers on to his local newspaper after it printed pictures of his house, claiming it breached his privacy.

The Hampstead and Highgate Express reportedly received a series of legal letters after it ran stories about building work on his £3.5 million North London home.

Neighbours were angry about the noise and mess created as builders excavated a basement for a swimming pool, gym and games room.

The lawyers demanded financial damages from the paper for identifying his home and infringing his privacy, MediaGuardian reports today.

But the newspaper has insisted it acted ‘responsibly’ by not displaying the house number. Both sides have been deadlocked, but Gervais’s publicist told Chortle today ‘the situation has been resolved’.

Gervais talks about his house and his neighbours his current live show, Fame, mock-complaining that reports that he only paid £2.5 million for the property would make it harder to sell at a good price.

His spokeswoman would not comment further on the privacy story.
